S&T EMG Angstadt Arms UDP-9 Gen 3 PDW AEG

The Angstadt Arms UDP-9 is one of the latest pistol calibre carbines to hit the market in the US, boasting a modern billet style receiver with enough M4/AR15 commonality to keep the yanks sweet but more than its fair share of enhanced and ambidextrous controls and an innovative new style of PDW stock.

The EMG version has the slick looks of the real thing together with full metal construction, and is kitted out on the inside with a microswitch trigger, reinforced gearbox components and an in-line MOSFET to keep everything in check and running smoothly. Consider this the more realistic alternative to other AR-9 platforms like the Specna X-series and G&G ARP-9. If you want more realism in an AR-9 platform, the UDP-9 would be a great pick!

Starting at the tip of the 6-inch outer barrel we have a muzzle brake style flash hider with multiple ports which is constructed from steel and conceals 14mm CCW male barrel threading beneath. This muzzle device looks great and fits the UDP-9 build perfectly, but if you have other plans such as a tracer unit or suppressor you can mount what you need as long as it is compatible with 14mm CCW threading. Just remember to remove the grub screw at the base of the flash hider before trying to unthread it!

The handguard of the UDP-9 is an M-LOK/20mm Picatinny hybrid handguard with M-LOK negative space attachment slots at the 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions and offset angles between, giving you plenty of options for where you mount your accessories. The 12 o'clock position features a 20mm Picatinny rail which meets the receiver rail seamlessly, allowing for optical sights of practically any length to be mounted, including red dot sight and magnifier combinations.

The upper rail has a set of "Troy" style flip-up iron sights pre-installed but they can be removed if you are a speedy boi who doesn't aim. For the rest of us, the iron sights are fully adjustable for both windage and elevation and can be flipped up easily by pressing the button on the left side of each sight and raising them into position.

The receiver matches the layout of the M4/AR15 platform well so if you are an M4 fan you will find it easy to transition to using the UDP-9. The magazine release is located on the right side of the magazine well and is an extended design which is great for those with smaller hands but also makes it more ambi friendly than the original M4 mag release. The surface of the magazine release has chevron texturing to provide positive grip, even in wet weather.

The fire selector is positioned just above the pistol grip and is present on either side, with the selector on the right side featuring a cutout to prevent it from digging into your hand. The selector provides a 90-degree throw between each fire mode, and each mode is indicated with engraved SAFE-FIRE-AUTO markings. The 90-degree selector throw means the fire selector is easy to actuate without the risk of accidentally bumping it out of position.

On the centre left of the receiver, we can find the dummy bolt catch which is a realistic low profile design matching the real UDP-9 perfectly. This part has no function but is nonetheless a separate movable part for added realism. The charging handle is located at the top rear of the receiver and is a "raptor" inspired design which can be pulled from either side easily. The charging handle doesn't need to be pulled before the first shot, but serves to retract the steel mock bolt carrier to provide access to the rotary HOP-up unit of the UDP-9. The rotary design is the latest for the M4/AR15 platform and has the benefit of holding its setting for longer during full auto fire and offering finer increments of adjustment so you can set the HOP-up perfectly for your chosen ammo weight.

The pistol grip is a modern ergonomic design and is very comfortable to hold, retaining the original M4/AR15 grip angle but with a filled out backstrap to keep your hand firmly in place and bevelled edges to reduce "hot spots" which cause irritation during longer firing sessions. The grip has linear texture on the front and back strap for extra grip, and a palm rest at the base so the UDP-9 never takes flight if you like to sprint around like a madman in game.

The stock of the UDP-9 is a unique design based on the real thing and features a full sized battery compartment suitable for standard buffer tube stick batteries with the added functionality of a compact PDW stock. To access the battery compartment you will need to press the button in the centre of the buffer tube which will allow the cap at the tip to come free. Inside you will see a Deans battery connector to which you mount your battery of choice. For the UDP-9 we recommend a 7.4V 1300mAh LiPo stick battery for an easy fit and great performance.

Adjusting the stock is easy from a firing grip thanks to the well placed adjustment button; on the left side of the stock, immediately behind the pistol grip. Pressing the button frees up the stock so you can pull it out to your desired length quickly, and also provides 6 positions of adjustment so you can set the stock length to suit your body type and loadout. The stock has a strange new style of butt plate which works remarkably well while staying compact and in keeping with the UDP-9's PDW styling.

Internally the UDP-9 is well equipped, boasting a microswitch trigger for a positively epic trigger response and a whole smattering of gearbox upgrades. The steel gearset is strengthened to handle stronger springs, the piston is polymer with a full rack of steel teeth for the perfect balance of low weight and optimum strength and the cylinder is aluminium to reduce friction and improve strength over standard brass cylinders. To keep all this internal goodness in check and running smoothly, the UDP-9 is equipped with an in-line MOSFET which prevents the battery from over discharged and adds electrical efficiency to further enhance the trigger response.

If you want a 9mm styled AR but none of the current offerings have what it takes, the EMG UDP-9 is certainly worth a close look at. The UDP-9 marries flawless full metal externals with superb performance and licenced trademarks and is a great balance of modern looks without being too garish and complex. Simple visual language gives this SMG its slick aesthetic and upgraded internals give it frightening performance on the field!
