Description

Novritsch fans; you're going to love this one! The SSR4 has returned in Mk2 form and it's better than ever before! With a full complement of pre-upgraded internals including a tightbore inner barrel, programmable MOSFET, high torque motor and a selection of CNC aluminium compression parts, the SSR4 Mk2 keeps the best bits of the original SSR4 and houses them in a reinforced gearbox shell and an entirely unique receiver design with plenty of quality-of-life improvements built-in!

The new receiver includes a magnetic dust cover and rear-placed bolt plate, giving you easy access to your HOP-up dial without needing to hold the charging handle back. The redesigned buffer tube mount makes quick spring changes faster and more convenient than ever before and an optional BB retaining O-ring prevents BBs from spilling out when you change mags if you choose to install it.

An ambidextrous magazine release means easy reloads for left-handed shooters and the adjustable modular trigger lets you adjust pre-travel to perfection as well as swap your trigger for a Novritsch Anodised CNC trigger in a variety of shapes and colour finishes. As with the original SSR4, the Mk2 has been set up for perfect angle of engagement straight from the factory, meaning you can let rip with an 11.1V LiPo battery and enjoy an incredible 25 rounds per second in full auto!

Starting at the front, we can find a unique multi-port muzzle brake with a swept back front end, a perfect match for the now iconic Novritsch handguard style. Beneath the flash hider, we have 14mm CCW male threads at the tip of the 11.5-inch alloy outer barrel, meaning if you want to get sneaky with the SSR4 Mk2, a suppressor or tracer unit can be mounted straight out of the box. The 11.5-inch barrel gives you the best balance between long-range effectiveness and CQB handling, though CQB specialists can shorten the SSR4 Mk2 using the "Short Conversion Kit" from Novritsch.

Moving rearwards, we come to the Mk2 handguard, constructed from CNC machined aluminium with a high quality anodised finish and a dynamic swept-back front end matching the angle of the muzzle brake and its ports. The handguard has M-LOK negative space attachment slots at the 3, 6, 9 and 12 o'clock positions, ready to mount M-LOK accessories or 20mm Picatinny rail adapters for M-LOK if you prefer to use 20mm Picatinny accessories. At the front and rear of the handguard, there is a short section of integral 20mm rail, with the front section intended to provide a direct mounting position for a front iron sight or RunCam and the rear section meets the 20mm rail on the receiver to allow large rifle scopes to be mounted so you can go full DMR if you so choose.

The new handguard follows the design philosophy of the original Full Metal SSR4, boasting an ultra-slim profile which is well suited to the C-clamp/thumb over bore grip. The central recessed section makes a great place to brace the thumb and is also a perfect spot to mount a pressure switch for any tactical flashlights or laser aiming modules you have mounted. The recessed section also lowers the weight of the handguard while still allowing you to mount 20mm Picatinny rail adapters for M-LOK if you like to mount a DBAL or PEQ further rearwards on your rifle.

Moving rearwards we come to the alloy receiver, a unique Novritsch design which keeps the familiar controls layout of the M4/AR-15 platform but replaces military-style features with pure functionality along with Novrtisch styling. The markings are present in the usual spot, on the left side of the magazine well, reading "NOVRITSCH" with "SSR4" in deep yet discrete recessed markings, proudly boasting its brand pedigree. The front of the magazine well also features linear gripping grooves, designed to allow the mag well to be used as a makeshift gripping surface when shooting from unconventional positions.

The fire selector is located on the left side of the receiver and offers 3 positions, marked with recessed pictograms. The pictogram style is unique to the SSR4 Mk2, with the safe mode denoted with a padlock symbol, semi-auto with a single projectile and full-auto with 3 stacked projectiles. With a 90-degree throw between each mode, the selector is ideally designed to allow for fast mode changes without the risk of being accidentally bumped out of place during an intense firefight. The available fire modes are semi-automatic and fully automatic by default, but thanks to the internal "Pro Trigger" MOSFET trigger system you can program the fire controls for 3-round burst mode and binary trigger, meaning the rifle will fire when the trigger is pulled back and fire again when the trigger is released.

The magazine release of the Mk2 is mirrored on either side, well within reach of the trigger finger for left or right-handed shooters. The release is a push-through design just like other M4/AR-15 platforms but is designed for pure speed, omitting the "mag release fence" of military-style AR receivers and equipped with extended textured surfaces for optimal grip in any weather conditions, with or without gloves. The magazine well itself is slightly wider than a standard AR and flared at the opening, allowing for faster reloads when working under pressure. Despite the flare, the magazine has practically no movement when inserted, pointing to tight tolerances and a high-quality overall build.

Moving up to the upper receiver, we can take note of its considerable weight reduction, adding a touch of modern styling while keeping handling qualities optimal. The mock forward assist button usually found on M4 AEGs has been deleted and the mock brass deflector is considerably reduced in profile, reducing the potential of snags and making the Mk2 stand out alongside other M4s.

At the top rear of the receiver, we can find the charging handle which is a modern skeletonised design, pairing perfectly with the cutting-edge styling of the SSR4 Mk2. Pulling the charging handle back will open the magnetic dust cover on the right side, revealing the rotary HOP-up unit. This is one of the notable quality-of-life features present in the Mk2, saving you the hassle of holding the charging handle back while setting your HOP-up while reducing wear and tear on your receiver in the long term.

The HOP-up unit is a modern rotary design constructed from high-density polymer and is paired with a 6.03mm tightbore inner barrel resulting in excellent accuracy and above-average range. The HOP-up provides a backspin effect to your BBs and allows you to tune the SSR4 Mk2 for different weights of ammo, looking for the flattest possible trajectory. The HOP-up bucking in the SSR4 is designed for 0.28g BBs according to Novritsch, meaning a stronger HOP-up effect than the usual, better resistance to wind and improved accuracy at long range. Another trick present in the Mk2 is its ability to host a BB retaining O-ring on the feed chute of the HOP-up, two of which are included in the box. Installing one of these will prevent BBs from falling out when you change mags, though you will need to ensure you properly clear your SSR4 before entering a safe zone.

The lower receiver also features what are known as "anti-rotation pin links" on each side, just above the trigger, mimicking an enhancement found on high-end real steel AR-15s. In real steel terms, the pin links prevent the pins of the fire control group from rotating during firing and messing with accuracy, though from an Airsoft standpoint, this is merely for the look. The trigger itself is another of the major improvements of the Mk2 over the original SSR4, offering adjustable pre-travel via the grub screw in its base along with the option to replace it with one of Novritsch's Anodised CNC Triggers, available in several shapes and colour options!

Moving down we come to the pistol grip, which is styled after the real steel "gunfighter" pistol grips, boasting a reduced grip angle for a more comfortable wrist position when shooting in modern shooting stances with the stock almost fully collapsed. Present on each side of the grip we can find textured panels, with additional linear texture on the front strap and a filled-out backstrap for the best combination of comfort and gripping qualities. This grip isn't the usual "gunfighter" style though, the baseplate has been switched out for a heat sink style baseplate constructed from alloy, improving strength and allowing the powerful 30K Neodymium magnet high torque motor to cool off more quickly between bursts of fire.

At the rear of the receiver, AR fans will notice the built-in castle nut, sidestepping realism for improved strength and easier access to the internal mainspring for power tuning. Beneath the castle nut, we can find an ambidextrous QD sling socket built into the receiver, ideally positioned for a single-point sling setup but equally usable with one of the plethora of QD sockets on the SSR4 Mk2 for a two-point setup. While the buffer tube design and mounting system is unique to the SSR4 Mk2, the buffer tube fits standard M4/AR-15 AEG sliding stocks, though you aren't likely to want to change the pre-installed stock!

Replacing the slimline crane-style stock found on the original SSR4, the new stock is a modernised A-frame style design with a low-profile adjustment lever and several QD sling points built-in, along with slots for standard strap slings. A QD sling socket is present on each flank, allowing QD sling swivels to be mounted to suit a left or right-handed shooter and paired with either of the sockets on the handguard. An additional QD socket is present on the bottom of the stock, giving you an extra option most AR stocks don't have and making the Mk2 SSR4 more flexible than ever before.

Being adjustable to any one of 6 positions, the stock can be set up to suit any body type and also allow for those who wear bulky body armour or plate carriers in game. The adjustment lever is inside the A-frame of the stock and needs to be held down as you slide the stock into the desired position. The butt plate is made from rubber, is curved to fit the shoulder perfectly and as we would expect for Novritsch, is prominently marked with "NOVRITSCH" in bold, recessed text.

The battery compartment of the SSR4 is inside the buffer tube and can be accessed by removing the stock. The stock can be removed just like any other M4/AR-15 platform; by pulling the textured tabs on the adjustment pin out and sliding the stock off to the rear. With this done, you will see a Deans battery connector to which you mount your choice of battery. We recommend an 11.1V 1450mAh LiPo battery for the SSR4 Mk2 to take advantage of its pre-upgraded components and angle of engagement correction!

On the inside, the SSR4 Mk2 is every bit as impressive as the earlier version, equipped with similar internal enhancements with slight refinements made to the gearbox internals and HOP-up system. One of the most notable improvements is the considerably reinforced gearbox shell, offering a longer lifespan and improved durability with reinforcements in all the right places.

Also inside is a 30K RPM high torque Neodymium magnet motor and a plethora of enhanced gearbox internals. These include CNC steel 16:1 high-speed gears, a CNC aluminium piston head and cylinder head, 8mm steel bushings, an aluminium nozzle and a steel quick-change spring guide. While on paper, the Mk2 has almost all the same parts as the original, the Novritsch tech team has squeezed a bit more performance out of the latest SSR4, bumping the rate of fire up from 20 RPS to a stunning 25 RPS!

The heart of the SSR4 Mk2 is its programmable MOSFET trigger system, known as the Novritsch "Pro Trigger". This allows for programmable fire modes, meaning you can set your rifle up to fire 3-round bursts instead of full auto and binary trigger instead of semi-auto. The Pro Trigger also monitors battery health via its overheat protection and low battery warning functions and provides full cycle completion with each shot to prevent excess wear to the gearbox internals.

Also amongst the Pro Trigger's tricks is adjustable pre-cocking, which positions the piston at the rear of its cycle after each shot to improve trigger response to borderline instantaneous. As you will receive it, the SSR4 Mk2 is set for pre-cocking in semi-auto and standard cycling in full auto. Novritsch recommends shooting a few shots in full auto before finishing your firing session to prolong the life of the internal parts.

It is unlikely you will ever need to upgrade this setup but if you ever do, the gearbox is a version 2 which is fully compatible with aftermarket version 2 AEG gearbox parts. The icing on the cake is the rubber dampening pad installed on the cylinder head; this corrects what is known as the "angle of engagement", meaning you can get the most out of the SSR4 Mk2's enormous in-game potential by using an 11.1V LiPo battery for a faster rate of fire and near-instantaneous trigger response.

If you're into the Novritsch aesthetic or you love and Airsoft-optimised platform designed for pure performance, customisation options and ease of use, the Novritsch SSR4 Mk2 M4/AR-15 AEG should be your next primary. Retaining everything which made the original such a beast with a flawlessly machined and unique new exterior, the SSR4 Mk2 is ready when you are!
