G&G Armament Piranha SL Gas Blowback Pistol

Introducing the Piranha SL from G&G, a unique G&G design building upon the success of G&Gs GTP gas system found in the GTP9 and SMC-9. The Piranha is a high speed design, featuring an extremely light split slide and a fixed, long outer barrel for enhanced accuracy. Let's take a closer look at what makes the Piranha SL so effective...

Starting from the front we can find a 12mm CW female thread at the tip of the fluted alloy outer barrel. With the appropriate adaptor, this pistol is capable of mounting suppressors or tracer units when needed. The spiral flute design adds some subtle flair to this aggressive-looking pistol, giving it a mean but refined look. The barrel is fixed in place, surrounded by the fixed fore-slide, increasing the accuracy potential of this pistol over more common tilting barrel pistols. The fixed fore-slide gives this pistol an extended Picatinny rail, meeting with the rail on the polymer frame seamlessly, allowing you to mount larger LAM units and tactical flashlights without issue.

The front sight, which features a red fibre-optic insert, is fixed on the fore-slide, giving the shooter a much more stable sight picture and further enhancing this pistol's already remarkable accuracy. As we move rearward we come to the reciprocating section of the split slide, which is approximately half the size and weight of a standard full slide, giving this pistol its immense cyclic rate and superb gas efficiency. The slide features "G&G ARMAMENT" engraved on the left side with a G&G logo laser-etched just above, and "9mm x 19" laser-etched into the left side. The slide serrations are of a modern, swept-back design, ensuring you can grip the pistols slide to cock it without slipping off, whilst blending in well with the dynamic look of the Piranha SL. At the rear of the slide, we find the rear sight, which features two green fibre-optic inserts making the sights as a pair super easy to acquire. The separate colours used in the front and rear sight prevent accidentally mixing up the sight dots in the heat of the moment and missing that important shot!

The slide release for this pistol can be found on either side of the pistol in a similar location to the EU-series of handguns, though the lever is larger and easier to access, sitting right under your thumb when taking a firing grip. The pistol's frame is constructed of a high-density polymer material and features texturing on the gripping surfaces to prevent the pistol from slipping from the shooter's grasp in bad weather conditions. On closer inspection, the texturing comprises of tiny little G&G logos, neat! The pistol grip also has the model name "Piranha" moulded in on either side, completing the professional appearance of this pistol.

The magazine release can be found in the usual spot, between the pistol grip and trigger guard, and is in the form of a triangular button with texture to ensure you hit it when you need to. The magazine release can be removed and reinstalled on the right side of the pistol to optimize the pistol for left-handed users, making this one of the few pistols which we can call truly ambidextrous. The trigger is of a two-stage design, similar to an M&P pistol, giving a short and light pull but with the added safety of knowing the pistol will only fire if the entire trigger is pulled. There is also a teeny tiny little button on the trigger itself which locks the two-stage trigger, rendering the gun completely safe; a thoughtful feature given some countries require a manual safety by law. At the middle point of the frame we can find the disassembly lever, which is present on both sides and allows the pistols slide to be removed for maintenance. To do so you will need to lock the slide back, align the disassembly lever with the cut out on the slide, then release the slide, keeping it under control, and the upper of the pistol should slide straight off.

Internally, the Piranha SL sports G&Gs latest GBB innovation. Known as the Whirl Cylinder Valve, which is designed to ensure that the propellant from the magazine doesn't freeze inside the pistol and inhibit its performance. Coupled with their enlarged gas valve, which allows more gas to be loaded into the magazine, increasing its efficiency. The HOP unit is of G&Gs proprietary GTP system, which allows adjustment without disassembling the pistol. This is done by inserting the included HOP adjustment tool, which takes the form of a dummy cartridge, into the muzzle end of the outer barrel and rotating to adjust. This hop system is very precise, adjusting in increments of 3 degrees, giving 120 different HOP settings. The design also reduces the chances of the HOP unit losing its setting under recoil. The pistol is supplied with two magazines, one being of standard length and the other being a transparent polymer extended magazine, with dummy cartridges visible through the material. This adds a nice level of style and realism to the pistol, whilst offering a bit of extra capacity as a bonus!
