H&K fans and US Army milsimmers, get excited now! The Umarex Heckler & Koch M110A1 SDMR AEG is the flawless DMR replica you've been waiting for! Based on the real steel HK M110A1 SDMR, an accurised HK417 derivative issued to the US Army as its latest marksman's rifle, the Umarex M110A1 boasts attention to detail bordering on the extreme and is pre-built as a semi-locked DMR hitting out at an impressive 410 FPS +/- 10% on 0.2g BBs.

On the outside, we are treated to a full metal build with a perfect replica of the issued Geissele SMR handguard, the latest H&K furniture and detailed H&K markings across the design, resulting in a breathtaking build which needs nothing but a scope and suppressor to be complete. Internally, the SDMR is rocking a 6.03mm tightbore inner barrel and an M120 spring, giving us superb consistency and efficiency straight out of the box. An in-line MOSFET provides a snappy trigger response thanks to improved electrical efficiency and protects the trigger contacts from corrosion in the long term.

If you're looking for your dream DMR and are the type that appreciates attention to detail, the Umarex M110A1 SDMR will be your new favourite replica. Even more so if you're into your modern US Army equipment!

Description

The real H&K M110A1 Squad Designated Marksman Rifle (SDMR)

The result of a US Army requirement for a shorter, lighter semi-automatic DMR rifle to replace the MK.14 EBR in service and supplement the existing M110 SASS and M110A1 SASS rifles, H&K M110A1 SDMR is based on the G28, an accurised derivative of the Heckler & Koch HK417 designed for the German Bundeswehr.

The SDMR is intended to be issued at squad level as a marksman's rifle for engagements between 300 and 600 meters, first seeing service with the US Army and National Guard and later the US Airforce, issued to Pararescuemen (PJs), EOD techs and other security personnel. Fitted with a new Geissele M-LOK handguard, a weight-reduced aluminium upper receiver and issued with an OSS SRM6 suppressor and SIG TANGO6 1-6×24 LPVO scope, this may be the ultimate iteration of the HK417 design.

The UMAREX Heckler & Koch M110A1 SDMR AEG

The Umarex replica of the SDMR is an absolute work of art, following on from the superb Umarex HK417 and adding in some pre-upgraded internals and externals which flawlessly mimic the real rifle. Externally, we have a full metal build with a perfect replica of the issued Geissele M-LOK handguard, a gorgeous flat bronze finish and all the latest H&K furniture, complete with licenced trademarks and unparalleled attention to even the smallest details.

The internals are based around a unique gearbox design similar to the version 2 with modifications intended to allow for ambidextrous controls. The gearbox is equipped with steel 18:1 gears, a quick change spring system, an M120 main spring and an in-line MOSFET to regulate current draw and protect the trigger contacts from corrosion. A 6.03mm tightbore inner barrel is also fitted to improve accuracy potential and increase air efficiency for a slight rise in FPS, paired with a rotary HOP-up unit so you get the range and accuracy to match the real deal.

The M110A1 SDMR hits out at an impressive 410 FPS on 0.2g BBs and is pre-locked to semi-automatic only, paying appropriate tribute to the real SDMR and giving you a pre-build Airsoft DMR platform straight out of the box. As impressive to handle as it is to shoot; if you are into Milsim or have an appetite for the latest and greatest real steel military issue platforms you'll love the Umarex M110A1 SDMR!

Starting at the front, we can find the suitably large HK417 style birdcage flash hider, constructed from steel with a realistic gun metal finish applied. This flash hider looks fantastic, well suited to the large and in charge form of the SDMR but if you want to mimic the real thing and add a suppressor or tracer, you're free to do so thanks to the outer barrel's 14mm CCW male threading.

The outer barrel itself is constructed from alloy and measures 16 inches in length, matching the real SDMR and allowing for the 455mm long 6.03mm tightbore inside. Mounted to the outer barrel and visible through the handguard ports, we are treated to a realistic dummy gas piston system, as we would expect given the high bar set for realism in other Umarex platforms. All of the parts of the G36-derived piston system are present in the SDMR, including the mock gas adjuster and piston spring, showing Umarex prioritises giving you the most authentic replica possible when other manufacturers cut corners.

Surrounding the outer barrel, gas block and mock piston system we have a flawless replica of the real steel Geissele SMR rail produced specifically for the SDMR. This handguard includes M-LOK negative space attachment slots at the 3, 6 and 9 o'clock positions with additional M-LOK slots at the upper offset angles, ready for M-LOK accessories or 20mm rail adapters for M-LOK. At the top, we have a numerically marked 20mm Picatinny rail which runs back to meet the receiver rail seamlessly, allowing for optical sights of almost any length to be installed, removed and reinstalled in the same exact spot, providing you're keeping track!

The SDMR handguard is incredibly light when compared to the original HK417 quad rail, making the front end of this beastly DMR fast to point, with agile handling closer to an assault rifle than the MK.14 EBR it replaced in real steel service. At the base of the handguard, we are treated to a steel QD sling socket on each side, allowing a two-point rifle sling to be mounted with the addition of QD sling swivels. An H&K logo is also laser engraved on either side, proudly displaying the SDMR's branding, just like the real thing.

Pre-installed on the SDMR's upper rail, we can find a set of offset flip-up aperture iron sights, canted 45 degrees to the right side. This means you can mount a lengthy riflescope with variable magnification and quickly rotate the rifle to use the iron sights to take care of sudden, close-range threats. The sights can be flipped down to reduce snagging potential by pressing the button on the left of each sight, and are fully adjustable for windage and elevation. If you want to slim the SDMR down to only what's needed, these sights can be removed via the flat-head screw on the left side of each sight's base.

Moving rearwards, we come to the receiver which is a flawless match for the real M110A1 SDMR, down to every surface profile and marking. On each side of the magazine well, we can find realistic laser engraved H&K M110A1 markings, along with the real steel calibre and "Warning: Read operators manual before use" on the front of the magazine well.

The receiver follows the M4/AR-15 format but is much larger than a normal M4, keeping things authentic to the real-world M110A1 with its larger 7.62x51mm chambering. The magazine release is located on the right side of the mag well and is also mirrored on the left side, making it easy to use for left or right-handed shooters. As with the M4/AR-15 platform, the mag release is a push-button design and is well within reach of the trigger finger when the rifle is held in a firing grip, keeping the best of the handling qualities of the M4 platform and its intuitive reloading process.

The fire selector switch is also ambidextrous, present on either side just above the pistol grip. An enlarged design constructed from high-density polymer with the standard 90-degree throw between fire modes, this selector is easy to use whatever the weather with minimal chances of it being knocked out of position inadvertently. Each selector position is denoted with the iconic H&K red high-vis pictogram, with the safe mode indicated with a white crossed-out projectile and the semi-auto position with a single red projectile. The third selector position of this semi-auto-locked DMR is also semi-auto, meaning you don't need to take this beast to a tech to use it as a DMR in-game!

Like the HK416A5, the bolt catch is yet another ambidextrous feature of the M110A1 SDMR, with an enlarged "ping pong paddle" style bolt catch on the left, just like an AR-15, and a textured tab just below the mock brass deflector on the right side. This allows the mock bolt to be released from a firing grip, and just as easily for a lefty as it is for right-handed shooters. In this M110A1 AEG, the bolt catch serves to release the detailed mock bolt carrier following HOP-up adjustment, dropping the mock bolt with a satisfying metal-on-metal "clank".

The charging handle is located at the top rear of the receiver, featuring an extended latch for easy access when wearing thick gloves. Pulling the charging handle back will pop open the polymer dust cover on the right side and retract the mock bolt carrier, revealing the rotary HOP-up chamber. The rotary unit is the latest design for M4/AR-15 AEGs, benefitting over the older "gear" unit in its ability to hold its setting in the long term and its adjustability in finer increments for the perfect HOP-up setting. Once you've completed your adjustment, hit the bolt catch on the left or right side to return the mock bolt to battery. The mock bolt carrier also features an H&K logo marking, just like the real M110A1.

When it comes to minor details, this receiver is absolutely spot on, even down to the machined away bolt catch fence and forward assist protrusion which leaves a small raised section in their place. These details are present on the real SDMR as a result of its weight reduction to meet US Army requirements, and their inclusion on the Umarex replica is yet more evidence of Umarex's commitment to providing realism, even down to extremely small aesthetic details like this.

The pre-installed pistol grip mimics H&K's latest pistol grip design, building on the original HK417 grip by adding a filled-out backstrap for improved support. The grip boasts the same comfortable profile as the HK417 but the finger ridge has also been removed to allow for improved comfort for a wider variety of hand shapes and sizes. The front, rear and sides also include textured panels to improve traction, meaning the M110A1 will never slip from your grasp as long as you do your part. The trigger guard is also enlarged and a perfect match for the real M110A1, allowing for full-finger gloves to be used without compromising access to the trigger.

At the rear of the receiver, we can find steel ambidextrous sling plate making use of QD sling sockets, allowing you to fit a two-point or single-point sling on either side with the addition of QD sling swivels. The steel construction of the sling plate gives it the strength it needs to support the weight of the M110A1, but we recommend a two-point sling so you can keep this relatively long platform under control when it is sidearm time!

The sling plate is retained by a steel castle nut, an extended design when compared to a standard AR, just like the real M110A1. The buffer tube itself is constructed from alloy and is the appropriately large AR-10/HK417 diameter tube, meaning standard AR stocks won't fit. Some would consider this a drawback, but we think any realistic replica of this beastly DMR deserves the correctly sized buffer tube. This AR did not skip leg day!

Mounted to the buffer tube, we can find the most modern H&K retractable stock, featuring "footman loop" sling slots on the top and in the centre for more conventional sling solutions and a low profile adjustment lever to minimise potential snag points. This stock also has a comfortable crane-stock-like sloped cheekpiece for a more comfortable cheek weld and a recurved rubber butt plate for maximum traction when wearing body armour.

The stock also serves as the battery compartment of the M110A1 SDMR, but we found you can actually fit a larger capacity battery inside the buffer tube. To access the battery compartment, simply hold the textured tab on the top rear of the stock down, and rotate the butt plate by 90 degrees, after which the butt plate will lift free. Inside, you will find a mini-Tamiya battery connector to which you connect your chosen battery. We recommend a 7.4V 2000mAh LiPo battery in stick configuration installed inside the buffer tube, but you can also use a 7.4V 1300mAh LiPo in nun-chuck/crane configuration if you prefer to use the battery storage ports in the cheek rest.

On the inside, the M110A1 SDMR is fitted with a unique gearbox design based on the version 2, equipped with 18:1 steel gears, a quick change spring system and an in-line MOSFET quick regulates current draw and protects the trigger contacts from corrosion. The inner barrel is a 6.03mm tightbore measuring an impressive 455mm in overall length, giving this DMR platform enormous accuracy potential once the rotary HOP-up is dialled in. As mentioned, the gearbox comes with an M120 spring pre-installed according to Umarex, meaning we are getting a nice extra FPS boost from the tightbore resulting in approximately 410 FPS +/- 10% on 0.2g BBs in our tests. Wack your biggest scope on this bad boy and get to work, this DMR is ready for duty!

Whether you're into Milsim and working on your US Army marksman loadout or simply an H&K fan, the Umarex M110A1 SDMR will have you drowning in your own drool. Built like a tank with the aesthetic of a masterpiece and pre-built as a battle-ready DMR, Umarex has outdone itself with this release!
