Umarex H&K HK417D AEG

Introducing the Umarex fully licensed HK417D AEG. This thing is a god gun, period. Everything made of metal on the real one is here, but Umarex has gone a little further, by using perfectly finished and precisely machined steel in all the areas you would find it on the real rifle. Complete with the modern iteration of H&Ks famous diopter rotating drum sights found on the MP5 and G3 with high vis range markings, this HK417 is ready to impress on the battleground of looking phenomenal, that's for sure. Let's take a deep dive in and go through the external and internal features of this impressive replica by Umarex.

At the front of the rifle, you will find a 7.62mm style birdcage flash hider made from steel, of course, and mounted to the male 14mm CCW thread at the tip of the 12" outer barrel. The outer barrel is also made from steel, and both are given a top-quality gunmetal finish, matching perfectly with a real HK417. A short way down the outer barrel we can find the dummy gas block, which has an integrated bayonet lug and sling loops machined in on both sides. The gas block even features a dummy gas adjuster, used on the real rifle to facilitate mounting a suppressor or adjusting the rifle for use when fouled. Whilst not provided in the box and generally not used on HK417 rifles in the real world, the gas block also features the mounting hole for the HK416 type folding front sight, a testament to the attention to detail paid by Umarex their HK417D AEG. Next, we come to the Picatinny 20mm quad rail system handguard, precisely machined from Aircraft-grade aluminium and finished with a subtle but gorgeous matt black anodizing. The handguard features Picatinny rails on all sides for mounting tactical lights, lasers, iron sights and even thermal optics if your pockets are that deep! The handguard retains the functionality of the real HK417, featuring a pair of steel locking screws that can be removed without tools, in order to swap the handguard out for longer versions.

Now we reach the receiver, which is also machined from high-quality aluminium and features laser-engraved H&K licensed markings on the magazine well and upper receiver. The Umarex HK417D AEG also features a functional mock bolt release made from steel, which can be used to hold the mock bolt open in order to access the rotary hop unit, found behind the mock bolt carrier. The mock carrier travels all the way back, similarly to a GBBR or real rifle, which is an extremely rare feature to find on an AEG and serves to heighten the already immersive experience handling one of these is. The charging handle is a slimline snag-free design, allowing the HK417 to be carried slung or otherwise handled without the protruding charging handle release catch snagging on your tactical gear. The classic H&K fire selector pictograms can be found engraved into both sides of the receiver, with safe being marked with white and semi and full auto indicated with red. The AR15 style fire selector can be found on the left side of the rifle, perfect for right-handed users. The lower receiver features an AR15/M4 style magazine release, which lies right beneath the finger when it is off the trigger, borrowing more AR15 ergonomics to make this rifle even more user-friendly. The magazine included with this rifle is a 100 round mid-cap magazine, and boy is it ever a chonky boi, featuring dummy cartridges inside and constructed from translucent polymer, it really completes the look of this piece of perfection. The lower receiver features an H&K ergonomic pistol grip, with texturing on either side and the back strap, ensuring you don't drop this pretty rifle! The pistol grip is also compatible with AR15 AEG replacements; if you have horrible taste and want to get rid of the beautiful H&K pistol grip!

As we reach the rear of the rifle we can find a steel buffer plate, aluminium AR-10 sized buffer tube with a steel castle nut to lock it in place. The buffer tube itself is not compatible with AR15 stocks as it is absolutely massive compared with a 5.56 style AR. There is plenty of room inside the buffer tube to house a battery, but as an added bonus the H&K crane-style stock has battery space as well, allowing you to put a monster battery inside and keep this guy hosing all day! The H&K crane stock is a massive advance from the traditional crane stocks out there, with a low snag adjustment lever, ergonomic rubber butt pad, and sling loops moulded-in for either left or right-handed shooters. Obviously, being an official H&K licensed product, it has a nice raised H&K logo moulded in on either side of the high-density polymer stock. To top it off, the H&K dioptre type drum iron sights are included in the form of Picatinny mounted fixed sights, which are a true joy to use and line up with the eye perfectly every time. With 4 range positions and high visibility range markings, you can select the aperture you want for the range you are shooting at with ease, and on the fly if need be.

When it comes to the internals of this impressive replica, Umarex has not held back. With the gearbox containing a bearing spring guide and self-shimming standard ratio gears, the HK417D AEG runs smoothly and efficiently as one would expect from a high-grade Airsoft rifle. The polymer piston has steel teeth and a metal piston head, to ensure this rifle lasts as it should.  The version two gearbox used in the Umarex HK417D differs from the standard with the configuration of the trigger switch, being located in a separate housing attached to the outside of the gearbox. This saves headaches when it comes to closing the gearbox after modification (no trigger return spring stress!) but means if you choose to later upgrade the HK417 with a MOSFET you will probably need it professionally installed. The hop-up is a proprietary rotary design, featuring a drum to adjust as with more modern Airsoft AR15s and G36s. It takes standard AEG hop rubbers and buckings, should you want to capitalize upon the HK417's DMR stylings by installing an R-Hop or other enhanced hop-up parts. The battery compartment in this replica lies within the H&K crane style stock, and can be accessed by turning the rubber butt pad counter clockwise when looking down the rifle.

The real H&K 417 is designed and manufactured by Heckler & Koch. Chambered in a 7.62x51 NATO Cartridge, it is the big brother to the HK416 which is chambered in 5.56x45. The 5.56 was seen as insufficient for the role of designated marksman due to the requirement for a round with more barrier penetration capability, stopping power, and range. Used by a number of Special Forces / Armed Forces and Law Enforcement organizations around the globe, from the US Army to Russian Spetsnaz / FSB, the HK417 has truly impressed the world.
