If you're into seriously massive sniper rifles, the EMG Barrett M98B MRAD® Spring Bolt Action Sniper Rifle belongs in your collection! Boasting full metal construction, a 6.03mm tightbore inner barrel and compatibility with standard AEG upgrade springs, this MRAD® replica is rocking beautifully engraved Barrett trademarks across the design and plenty of 20mm Picatinny real estate, ready for your choice of accessories.

MRAD® stands for Multi-Role Adaptable Design, a rifle based on the successful Barrett M98B and adapted for special forces use for the PSR and later ASR sniper rifle programs. The MRAD® added a side folding stock, a longer handguard with extra space for thermal and night vision devices along with the ability to quickly change calibres and barrel lengths in the field. Following these improvements, the MRAD® was adopted by USSOCOM and the US Army as the MK.22 MOD.1 ASR and the MK.22 PSR respectively.

Measuring a whopping 132cm with the stock extended and tipping the scales at a substantial 4.8kg before you've added your choice of optical sight, the MRAD® is definitely not a sniper rifle for the faint of heart! If you've got what it takes to wield one of the most impressive sniper rifles out there, the EMG Barrett M98B MRAD® Spring Bolt Action Sniper Rifle is ready for you!

Full description

Description

If you're in search of an ultra-modern sniper rifle setup which suits a variety of Milsim loadouts, the EMG Barrett M98B MRAD® Spring Bolt Action Sniper Rifle is exactly that! A highly detailed, licenced replica of the real steel Barrett MRAD®, this is one substantial sniper rifle and is sure to draw plenty of curious eyes on a game day!

The real steel MRAD® was the result of a USSOCOM requirement for a new sniper rifle, known initially as the PSR and later, the ASR. Real-world users include the US Army, USSOCOM, US Marine Corps, Israeli Defence Force, South Korean 707th Special Mission Group and Snipers of the AFU (Armed Forces of Ukraine). Widely regarded as one of the best military precision rifles available today and firmly seated at the cutting edge of sniper rifle development, the MRAD® continues Barrett Firearms' legacy of reaching out to incredible ranges and pushing the limits of what was previously thought possible with man-portable systems.

While it may not be quite as massive as the now old-school Barrett M82, the MRAD® is a sizable piece of kit, though it doesn't come without its performance perks! Inside, you'll find a 6.03mm tightbore inner barrel measuring a whopping 590mm in overall length, meaning accuracy should absolutely be on point with high-quality, heavy-weight BBs (0.28g+). Out of the box, we're getting around 430 FPS with 0.2g BBs on the chronograph, though the MRAD® takes standard AEG upgrade springs, meaning the sky is the limit to how hard this beast of a sniper rifle hits.

Starting at the front, we can find the dual-ported snout of the MRAD® in the form of its massive muzzle brake, designed to direct hot gasses to reduce felt recoil. A major part of the iconic Barrett styling, the muzzle brake is constructed from aluminium and mounts via a pair of grub screws. The barrel beneath reportedly has 14mm CCW male threading at the tip but during our tests, we found the muzzle brake was very difficult to remove without potentially causing damage so we are currently unable to confirm this.

Moving rearwards, we can take note of the fluted barrel, serving to reduce weight and improve heat dissipation qualities in real steel terms while perfectly matching the look of the real MRAD® Fluted Barrel profile. The fluting is well-machined and runs almost the entire length of the outer barrel. This means the fluting is visible through the vent ports of the monolithic upper receiver/handguard setup, just like the real MRAD®.

As mentioned, the upper receiver and handguard are machined as a single piece, guaranteeing strength and ensuring you can get a reliable zero with any laser aiming devices mounted to the handguard. At the 12 o'clock position, we have a 20mm Picatinny rail which measures an impressive 56cm in length, plenty of space for optical sights or practically any size. On each side and the bottom, we have additional rail sections which are removable and can be repositioned using the handguard's threaded attachment holes. These rails also have a QD sling socket integrated into each, allowing you to mount a sling via QD sling swivels using the other QD sockets on each side of the stock. A sling is definitely a solid choice for such a hefty platform!

On each side of the upper receiver, we are treated to flawlessly engraved Barrett markings matching those of the real thing to a tee. On the left side, we have "MRAD" with "MULTI-ROLE ADAPTIVE DESIGN" in smaller text just below. Over on the right, we have a detailed Barrett Firearms logo engraved just below the chamber, discretely displaying the MRAD's premium brand pedigree.

The lower receiver is made from high-density polymer with a gorgeous matt finish, authentically replicating the waffle-style texture around the magazine well of the real deal. The magazine release is ambidextrous, centrally positioned at the rear of the mag well to facilitate easy reloads from the prone position, with slight extensions on either side so you can operate it with your trigger finger. The fire control group will be very familiar for M4/AR-15 users, making use of an AEG style "A2" finger-rigged pistol grip and AR style fire selector with a 90-degree throw between safe and fire. This may take a bit of getting used to if you're accustomed to thumb safeties found on legacy sniper rifles but if you run an M4, you'll easily adapt!

On the left side, just above the trigger, we have yet more Barrett trademarks, reading "BARRETT FIREARMS MFG INC" with "MURFREESBORO, TN, U.S.A." and "MULTI-CALIBER" below. These markings are laser engraved in white but don't stand out a mile, blending well with the discrete nature of the other trademarks.

At the rear, we can find one of the major external changes between the M98B and the newer MRAD®; its side folding multi-adjustable stock. The stock offers an adjustable cheek rest, adjustable length of pull, a 20mm Picatinny monopod mount, 2 QD sling sockets on each side and side folding functionality; a considerable step up from the M98B stock.

To fold the stock, press the button on the left side, after which the stock will fold to the right side and lock around the bolt handle. To adjust the length of pull, press the button behind the cheek riser at the top rear of the stock and pull the butt plate out to your choice of the 6 available length of pull positions. The cheek riser adjusts via the thumb screw on the right side of the stock (supplied separately in the box); simply loosen it up, slide the cheek riser into your preferred position then tighten the screw down again. With all this adjustability, the MRAD® stock is extremely comfortable when set up just right, letting you concentrate on landing hits without discomfort distracting you!

Internally, the MRAD® is broadly based around the King Arms spring-powered Dragunov SVD, giving it an absolutely insane 590mm inner barrel; far longer than VSR-based Airsoft sniper rifles. The barrel is also a 6.03mm tightbore example, providing air-efficiency improvements and excellent accuracy potential when kept clean and used with high quality ammo. The piston is also CNC machined from aluminium and the main spring is standard AEG spec, meaning you can tune the power easily with commonly available parts.

If you're working on a Milsim loadout and need a sniper rifle to match, the EMG Barrett M98B MRAD® Spring Bolt Action Sniper Rifle is a great call. While it may be challenging to skirmish with due to its weight and size, the MRAD® is absolutely beautifully made and shoots well straight out of the box with plenty of upgrade options for the performance seekers!

Assembly Instructions

The EMG MRAD® is supplied in two parts and you will need to install the outer barrel to get shooting. Here's how you do it!

  1. Ensure the magazine is removed.
  2. Insert the barrel through the front of the body, paying close attention to the position of the locating lugs near the HOP-up dial and the orientation of the feed port. The feed port should be facing the left side of the rifle upon insertion.
  3. With the barrel carefully pushed all the way back, rotate it by 90 degrees counterclockwise (with the barrel facing away from yourself).
  4. Take a look through the magazine well. The brass of the nozzle should be visible through the feed chute. If it is not, your barrel is inserted upside down.
  5. Once you've confirmed the nozzle is visible through the feed chute, tighten the knurled thumb screw on the underside of the handguard to lock the barrel in place.
