Tokyo Marui Saiga-12 SBS Gas Blowback Shotgun

If you specialise in CQB, you couldn't ask for a better room-clearing tool than the Tokyo Marui Saiga-12 SBS Gas Blowback Shotgun! This beast is the short-barreled version of the original Saiga-12K, sending 3 BBs through 3 inner barrels downrange with every shot, providing a devasting effect on target and a realistic shotgun-like spread. 

The SBS version is considerably more compact than the original and equipped with modern furniture, with a 20mm Picatinny railed handguard, a side folding AR buffer tube and an M4/AR-15 A2 pistol grip. Another addition to this shorter variant is its ferocious full auto fire mode, putting rounds down at a nauseating rate, ideal for fast-moving outdoor playstyles. Starting at the front, we can find a super-aggressive muzzle choke styled after real steel breaching chokes, complete with a spiked front end with knurling around its circumference. This is a great match for the sizeable shotgun-style barrel and the CQB leaning of the Saiga-12 SBS, giving it a squat, aggressive aura which is as intimidating in the safe zone as it is in the game zone!

The barrel leads back to the handguard, constructed from high density polymer with textured sides for optimal traction. The handguard is a comfortable shape and is equipped with 20mm Picatinny rails on each side, ready for your tactical flashlight or laser aiming device. In the box, we are treated to an optional rail which can be installed at the 6 o'clock position, allowing you to run a vertical or angled foregrip or other 20mm Picatinny accessories. 

Above the handguard, we have the ported upper handguard, constructed from alloy and equipped with a lengthy polymer 20mm rail, ready for a red dot sight. The forward mounting position is ideal for close quarters, giving you a wider unobstructed field of view to avoid tunnel vision. This rail is of ample length to fit a red dot sight and laser aiming device, though if you prefer your optic mounted further to the rear you'll be happy to learn that the Saiga-12 SBS has a Russian AK-style side rail on the left side of the receiver. 

At the front of the upper handguard, we have the realistically massive Saiga-12-style gas block, complete with a removable mock gas plug. This doesn't serve any purpose for Airsoft but is a nice touch to keep realism fans happy. To remove the gas plug, simply hold the detent spring down and unthread it, just like a real Saiga-12! 

Moving rearwards, we come to the receiver which is constructed from alloy with a steel top cover. On each side, you'll see realistic Saiga markings matching the real thing perfectly, precisely engraved without a flaw to be found. All of the rivets, pins and bolts are in the right places, as is the receiver reinforcement at the front right. As mentioned, the left side includes an AK-style side rail which can be used to mount a Russian AK optic or a 20mm rail adapter. Make no mistake, this Saiga-12 is as flawless a replica as it is a shooter!

On the right side, we cannot help but notice the massive Saiga-12 bolt carrier, much bigger than the AK it is based on with the appropriately sized ejection port. The port also includes a reciprocating plate at the rear, a nifty modification made to the original Kalashnikov design to allow it to eject 12 gauge shotgun shells while keeping the receiver standard AK length. The fire selector is unchanged from the AK design, functioning as a dust cover when in the "safe" position with semi-auto at the bottom and full auto in the middle. 

The magazine release is centrally placed on the bottom, similar to an AK platform but with more clearance between it and the trigger guard. The trigger guard is just behind, constructed from steel with a realistic finish, matching the receiver, top cover and fire selector perfectly. The pistol grip is another sidestep of the original AK/Saiga design in line with the other SBS furniture; an M4/AR-15 "A2" style pistol grip mounted via an AK to AR grip adapter. This grip is reportedly compatible with M4/AR-15 GBBR style pistol grips but only those without a filled-out backstrap. 

At the rear, we are treated to a skeletonised M4/AR-15 buffer tube mounted on a side folding adapter, giving you both length of pull adjustment and side folding functionality. To extend the stock, simply press the adjustment lever on the bottom and slide it into your position of choice, just like an M4. 

To fold the stock, press the button on the bottom to unlock it, then swing it around to the right side. While there is no retention lock when the stock is folded, it stays in place firmly with no movement whatsoever, pointing to a well-designed folding mech. This also means when you want to switch from stock folded to stock deployed you can simply grab the stock and slap it into the deployed position with no fiddly buttons to slow you down! 

When it comes to performance, the Saiga-12 SBS is extremely impressive. While it may not have quite the punch of its bigger brother at long range, it was consistently able to hit our 50-meter target using 0.28g BBs, giving it the range to compete with all but the most well-set-up AEGs. The HOP-up is fixed but is very effective, as we would expect from Tokyo Marui, capable of lifting up to 0.32g BBs, though we had our best results with 0.28g. 

The cyclic rate of the bolt carrier is also very snappy on standard green gas, an attribute owed to the very efficient design intended primarily for low-pressure gas. The full auto mode is positively scary, an absolute asset to outdoor skirmishers looking to maximise hit probability.

Special Instructions

We recommend using low-pressure gas with the TM Saiga 12 as it is designed with this in mind. Summer gas is ideal on warmer days and when the temperature drops, stick to standard green gas pressure (equivalent to NUPROL 2.0/VORSK V6/ASG Ultrair) at a maximum.
