Description
If you're into old-school firearm replicas or working on a Japanese Imperial Army loadout, the S&T Nambu Type 100/40 Submachine Gun AEG; Real Wood should please you! Externally, the S&T Type 100/40 is a perfect match for the real deal, even down to its gorgeous antique finish. Every metal part on the real thing is appropriately replicated in metal, with the ported heatshield and receiver being constructed from stamped sheet steel for a build so authentic it wouldn't look out of place in a museum!
A scarce design in the real world and even rarer in Airsoft, the Nambu Type 100/40 SMG is the iconic Japanese WWII submachine gun design with several features unique to Japanese firearms. The real steel Type 100 came about following several specialised Japanese Imperial Army units' requests, standing in contrast to Western militaries which at the time issued SMGs to officers as opposed to elite troops.
Designed by Kijiro Nambu, known as one of the best Japanese small arms designers of all time, the Type 100 was initially issued primarily to Japanese Naval Raiders but was later adopted by other units and reportedly very well-liked. This, the Type 100/40 is the early war model, equipped with all the niceties that had to be ditched for cost and time expediency in the later Type 100/44 variant, including adjustable aperture iron sights, a folding bipod and beautifully finished wood stock.
Internally, the Type 100 features a unique gearbox shell made from alloy with 18:1 reinforced steel gears, steel bushings, a quick change spring system and a high torque motor. The inner barrel is a 6.03mm tightbore, meaning above average accuracy and range from this classic SMG replica. If you like unique platforms or need an SMG to complete your early-war Japanese Imperial Army collection, the S&T Nambu Type 100/40 Submachine Gun AEG; Real Wood will suit you perfectly!
Starting up front, we have a featureless muzzle with a bayonet lug just below, designed to affix the Type 30 Bayonet in classic Japanese style. While other militaries didn't bother with bayonet lugs on SMGs, the Japanese Imperial Army was very insistent that any platform which could have a bayonet mounted must have one, for example, the Type 96 Light Machine gun. At the tip of the barrel, we have a well-concealed thread protector with 14mm CCW male barrel threads beneath, ready for a muzzle device of your choice, including tracer units and suppressors. While a threaded barrel might not be the best for authenticity, it is a handy functional feature which you wouldn't know was there at a glance!
The rod running below the barrel isn't a functional part of the original firearm but was added to ensure the bayonet mount was strong enough to go the distance without putting too much force on the barrel and adversely affecting accuracy. The entire front end is made from metal and beautifully finished, with the ported barrel shroud/heat shield made from stamped sheet steel for maximum realism. The ribbed outer barrel is visible through the ports, designed to assist cooling under rapid fire by increasing surface area; another feature ditched from the simplified Type 100/44 in the later years of WWII to save machining time and money.
At the rear of the heatshield, we can find our first sling point on the right side, constructed from steel so you can confidently sling this hefty platform with no risk of failure. Behind the sling point, we have a folding bipod, an absolutely unique addition to the SMG formula only found on the Type 100/40. While this was ditched in the later Type 100/44 variant, the folding bipod is a highly functional piece with steel legs and spiked toes designed to dig into soft ground to provide an ultra-stable firing platform. To deploy the bipod, simply disconnect the folded steel retainer around the legs of the bipod, near the trigger guard, and fold it into place. To stow it, simply reverse this procedure.
As we reach the receiver, we can take note of the tubular shape similar to the German Bergmann MP18 from which many SMGs of this era were based, including the Type 100/40. The magazine well is on the left side, similar in placement to the legendary STEN, with the magazine release at the rear, requiring pushing downwards to release the mag. The charging handle is on the right side, an ambi-friendly design turned upwards at a slight angle, with the ejection port just below. Holding the charging handle back opens the ejection port to reveal the rotary HOP-up adjuster, allowing you to tune the trajectory by varying backspin applied to your BBs, seeking the flattest possible trajectory. The HOP-up unit design is unique but compatible with standard AEG HOP-up buckings, nubs and inner barrels, meaning upgrades are a go for the techy types!
The front and rear caps of the receiver are made from milled alloy, finished with an authentic antiqued look mimicking milled steel perfectly. The tubular central section is made from stamped sheet steel, just like the real thing. The receiver end cap includes the disassembly lever on the right side and the adjustable tangent aperture iron sight on the top. With an impressively long sight radius and plenty of range adjustment available, the iron sights of the Type 100/40 are positively exceptional for a WWII SMG, though these sights were ditched in the later Type 100/44 in favour of a simple fixed rear aperture sight and unprotected front blade similar to those on the US Army's Grease Gun.
Moving down, we come to the absolutely gorgeous real wood stock, featuring a cutout on the right side to allow spent shells to freely eject in the real thing. On each side, we have finger grooves so the Type 100/40 can be held comfortably (the STEN is jealous!), followed by the semi-pistol grip stock. The stock is comfortable to hold, filling out the hand nicely and avoiding sharp corners which can cause fatigue over long durations. The trigger guard is right where we would expect, constructed from alloy with the same fantastic antique finish as the other alloy parts. In front of the guard, we have the sliding safety catch, offering a trigger lock when pushed forward or full auto when pulled rearward. While its lack of a semi-automatic function may mean you can't use the Type 100/40 in CQB, this was a necessary sacrifice to keep this replica authentic!
On the bottom of the stock, we have our rear sling point, constructed from steel and ideally suited to a two-point sling. The wood grain showcased on the stock is fantastic, in line with the flawlessly manufactured real Type 100/40 and considerably nicer than the rough and ready Type 100/44.
At the rear, we come to the butt plate which is constructed from alloy and finished to match the other metal parts, concealing the battery compartment inside the stock. To access the battery compartment, simply press the dummy screw on the top of the butt plate and pull it away, revealing a mini-Tamiya battery connector inside. There is plenty of space in the Type 100/40's stock, allowing a 7.4V 2300mAh LiPo battery in block configuration to fit comfortably inside. With your battery installed, simply pop the butt plate back on where it will lock into place securely.
Inside the Type 100/40, we are treated to a respectable feature set, including reinforced 18:1 ratio steel gears running on steel bushings driven by a high torque motor. The gearbox shell is a unique design constructed from alloy but is compatible with most version 2/3 gearbox upgrade parts. The inner barrel is a 6.03mm tightbore, meaning a slight FPS boost using the same strength spring and improved accuracy potential when used with high-quality BBs. Overall, this unique SMG shoots nicely with an impressive rate of fire and response rate, making it competitive with more modern but more boring alternatives!
If you collect rare historical firearm replicas or are working on a stitch-perfect Japanese WW2 loadout, the S&T Nambu Type 100/40 Submachine Gun AEG; Real Wood should be your next primary. With flawless external build quality and the significant weight a proper replica needs, this mould-breaking SMG design will definitely turn heads in game and look fantastic on display as a bonus!
