  • Full metal construction
  • G&G's Unique GBBR system
  • Awesome gas efficiency, ambi controls!

If you've been umming and ahhing about a GBBR but the technical aspects put you off, the G&G MGCR 556 GBB Rifle should give you what you need! This superbly designed gas blowback rifle works just like the real thing when it comes to handling and manipulation but is considerately designed on the inside to ensure it outlasts rival platforms, both in its lifespan and in its cold weather performance.

Externally, the MGCR is a unique design from G&G based on the M4/AR-15 shape but considerably enhanced with a weight-reduced receiver, enlarged ambidextrous controls and a lightweight M-LOK handguard for all your mission essential accessories. The stock depends on which length variant you choose, but all are equipped with internal storage compartments for snacks or batteries and QD sling sockets on either side. Make no mistake, from an external design standpoint, this AR is at the cutting edge!

Inside, we are treated to internals we will probably never need to touch, including an ultra-light aluminium bolt carrier tipping the scales at a mere 108g with the nozzle, a built-in buffer system disguised as a gas piston to reduce wear from the bolt carrier impacting the HOP-up unit and full steel trigger components, including the trigger, sear, hammer, disconnector and valve knocker, with a steel bolt catch thrown in for good measure. Experienced GBBR users will know, when it comes to essential steel GBBR internals, the MGCR ticks all the boxes!

Description

If you're seeking a GBBR which needs no custom work to be good, works fantastically even in full auto and is equipped with an ultra-light bolt carrier and steel trigger parts, look no further than the G&G Armament MGCR 556 GBB Rifle. Available in 3 lengths, from the compact 7" version through the mid-length 10" and carbine length 12" version, the MGCR will be an asset to realism-focused skirmishers operating in any environment!

GBBR veterans will know too well the pain of upgrading these beasts, seeking the perfect balance between cyclic rate, recoil and gas efficiency. We believe G&G has nailed it with the MGCR, with the best combination of parts for use in the often inclement UK weather. Every part of the MGCR is considerately designed for maximum longevity, including its full steel trigger group components, steel bolt catch, lightweight aluminium bolt carrier and built-in shock-absorbing buffer disguised as a realistic gas piston system.

When tested, we were astonished at how well the MGCR maintains its above-average rate of fire when tested in full auto. Granted, our tests were done on a relatively hot day, but the bolt was still able to lock to the rear after around 60 shots from a single gas fill fired in full auto bursts! This is very impressive indeed and probably means in colder weather, the MGCR will still be usable long after other GBBRs have gone into hibernation for the colder months.

Externally, the MGCR is an M4/AR-15 with a side of style, boasting a unique weight-reduced receiver, enhanced and extended controls, most of which are ambidextrous, a uniquely slim grip and a choice of 3 unique G&G stock designs depending on which length variant you choose. The handguard is equipped with M-LOK slots; just what the modern skirmisher needs and the fire selector switch boasts an ultra-short 45-degree throw, letting you get on target and engage faster than a standard AR platform if you play "sights off, safety on". If you're looking for a highly efficient GBBR with a modern look that you'll probably never have to touch internally beyond maintenance, the G&G MGCR is the one to go for!

Starting at the front, we are equipped with a muzzle brake style flash hider mounted to 14mm CCW male threading at the outer barrel's tip. This means you can add a tracer unit or suppressor to the MGCR for a sneaky look or an instinct-aiming advantage in CQB. The brake is held on by a grub screw so make sure you remove the screw before attempting to unthread the brake!

The HOP-up adjuster is unconventionally located at the tip of the outer barrel, as is the convention for the latest G&G Armament releases. Adjusting the HOP-up requires an Allen key to be inserted through the muzzle device, so if you're running a suppressor you may have to remove it until you've got the HOP-up set perfectly.

Moving slightly rearwards brings us to the mock gas block, complete with a dummy gas adjuster on the front. The gas block is an essential part of the M4/AR-15 build when it comes to realism and in the MGCR, this is where the dummy gas piston connects. The dummy gas piston functions as a recoil buffer to reduce impacts of the bolt carrier on the HOP-up unit, a known problem for GBBRs which usually results in the HOP-up unit breaking over time. When you rack the charging handle, you can see the piston reciprocate back and forth which is not only realistic but shows G&G has done their homework, i.e. plenty of research on the failure points of previously released GBBR systems.

The handguard is equipped with a 20mm Picatinny rail on top with flip-up iron sights pre-installed and M-LOK slots at the 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions, ready for your choice of M-LOK accessories or 20mm rail adapters. The handguard length depends on which variant you choose and each variant is named for its handguard length, making choosing a breeze! At the base of the handguard, we are treated to an M-LOK logo, confirming that this handguard is in spec with real M-LOK accessories.

Next up, we reach the receiver which is constructed from alloy and adorned with stylish weight-reducing relief cuts. The cuts give the MGCR the looks of an ultra-modern AR and keep the handling of the rifle flawless without milling all the way through the receiver and potentially causing dirt and debris ingress. The layout of the controls is the same as a standard AR, though all of the controls are extended and redesigned for easy actuation and maximum traction.

The magazine release is ambidextrous, skeletonised to reduce weight and positioned on either side of the magazine well, perfect for left or right-handed shooters. The fire selector switch is also ambidextrous and offers a uniquely short throw of only 45 degrees between modes; half that of a standard AR. This means when you can get on target faster if you practice proper handling discipline, made all the better by the enhanced profile of the fire selector switch itself.

The only control on the MGCR that isn't ambidextrous is the considerably enlarged and skeletonised bolt catch, present on the left side of the receiver. The bolt catch is also made from steel, giving it the strength needed for a lifetime of reliable bolt locking and getting ahead of known failure points in previously released GBBR systems. The size of the bolt catch makes it very easy to find when working under pressure, though if you're a lefty you'll be happy to learn that the charging handle is ambidextrous, meaning you can run it back after a reload and drop the bolt should you find you're unable to reach the standard catch using your trigger finger.

Another neat trick the MGCR has in store is its functional forward assist button! We doubt you'll ever use this in the heat of a skirmish but if you manually rack the bolt and let it return slowly so it doesn't quite close, the forward assist can be pushed and will close the bolt for you. This shows how much G&G values realism despite the unique external design of the MGCR!

Inside the enlarged trigger guard built into the lower receiver, we can find the flat trigger of the MGCR, allowing you to pump out semi-automatic fire at an incredible rate without slipping off the trigger. The trigger's external design helps the MGCR to blend in with the styling of G&G's AEG range and is also constructed from steel, meaning it will never wear out from normal use. The pistol grip is yet another unique aspect of the MGCR design and is set at a more vertical angle than the original "A2" grip and is very, very slim. This makes it comfortable for a wide variety of hand sizes, allowing everyone to reach the controls easily and operate the MGCR intuitively. The grip also includes a storage compartment inside, the perfect place to stash your HOP-up adjustment Allen key!

At the rear of the receiver, we are treated to a centrally positioned ambidextrous QD sling socket built into the buffer plate. Naturally, the plate is constructed from steel, meaning it is well up to the task of supporting the weight of the MGCR with a single-point sling. The castle nut which holds the buffer tube onto the receiver is also made from steel, ensuring the threading stays effective even after repeated full disassembly.

The buffer tube assembly follows just behind, offering 6 length of pull adjustment positions for the stock so you can adjust it to suit your body type and loadout. Which stock you get depends on your chosen variant. The 7" version is equipped with the G&G GOS V2 stock, an A-frame design with a battery storage compartment in the toe of the stock, a rubber butt plate and QD sling sockets on either side. The 10" version is rocking the GOS V8 stock, a clubfoot style stock with a low profile adjustment lever, a storage compartment in the butt plate and QD sling sockets on each side. The longest of the bunch, the 12" model has the GOS V7 stock, similar in side profile to the V8 but with sloped cheekpieces on each side similar to the prolific "crane" stock. The V7 also has QD sling sockets on each side, ready for QD swivels to be mounted.

Inside, the G&G MGCR is designed with longevity and gas efficiency in mind, boasting an ultra-light aluminium bolt carrier to keep the cyclic rate high and a full complement of steel parts inside the trigger group. The hammer, sear, disconnector, valve knocker and trigger are all made from steel, as is the bolt catch. It seems the days of replacing everything inside your GBBR to make it reliable are long behind us, G&G has done it all for you!

Performance-wise, this is one of the most impressive GBBRs on the market currently, offering a realistically fast cyclic rate in both semi and full auto while keeping the HOP-up unit protected from bolt carrier impacts via its buffer system, cunningly disguised as a realistic gas piston system. The magazine itself is also a superb design, marrying features from other GBBR systems with legendary G&G build quality such as the "dry-fire" mode taken from the WE Open Bolt system, enhanced cold-resistant gas route buckings and an enlarged bolt catch activation tab similar to the Tokyo Marui ZET system. Long story short, we are very impressed indeed with the MGCR, especially if this will be your first GBBR!

If you've always fancied a GBBR but don't want the technical headaches or the need to spend the value of the platform again on internal upgrades to make it reliable, the MGCR from G&G is what you need. We expect this system will end up with a fantastic reputation once it has been out in the field for a while in the hands of skirmishers!
