If CQB is your poison, you are going to love this one! The CM.106A AR-9 from CYMA adds to the increasingly wide range of AR-9 platforms available, making the decision on which platform to go for that much harder! The CM.106A sports full metal construction, a pre-installed electronic trigger unit with MOSFET, a high-speed motor, and internals which have been upgraded even beyond the already impressive "Platinum" internal setup.

Full description

Description

The CM.106A is a full metal AR-9 platform with a modern tactical style, fitting right in with the other ultra-modern M4/AR15 AEG rifles of CYMA's Platinum line-up but with even further enhanced internals in a new, more compact form optimised for CQB and highly mobile play styles. The CM.106 has been treated to a full internal upgrade, including a 6.03mm tight bore inner barrel, alloy HOP-up unit, high-speed motor, a silent cylinder head and silent piston head. This AR-9 can be fed from certain SMG-5 AEG magazines (see Special Instructions below for more details on compatible spare mags) and is CYMA's own unique take on the AR-9 platform with a uniquely designed receiver, their compact mini-crane style stock and a free-floated M-LOK handguard.

Starting at the tip of the 5-inch alloy outer barrel we can find a sound amplifying muzzle device pre-installed on the barrel's 14mm CCW male threading. This device gives a deafening "BOOM" when the AEG is fired, providing a psychological warfare advantage, especially at close range. This sound amp is much more compact than others on the market which helps keep the overall length of the CM.106A to a minimum for better close-quarters handling. The muzzle device also sits nicely recessed into the M-LOK handguard for the integral look, giving the front end of the CM.106A a sleek, completed feel.

Moving rearwards, we come to the M-LOK handguard of the CM.106A, which is CNC machined to ensure both the 20mm Picatinny top rail and M-LOK attachment slots are perfectly in spec and can accept any accessories without trouble. This handguard comes with an SMG-5K style vertical foregrip and hand stop pre-installed which is superb for close quarters handling and suits the compact design of the CM.106A.

This grip setup attaches to the M-LOK attachment slots at the 6 o'clock position on the handguard, and as such can be removed if you have a preferred foregrip or you like to run the front end slick. At the top of the handguard, we can find a 20mm Picatinny rail which runs all the way back to interface with the receiver rail seamlessly, allowing longer optical sights and red dot sight magnifier combos to be used, even on this compact weapon. M-LOK attachment slots are available at the 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions, allowing you to add rail covers, alternative grips or 20mm rail sections wherever you need them. At the rear of the handguard, we can find QD sling sockets inset into the handguard on either side, offering the opportunity to equip the CM.106A with a QD sling swivels and make use of a two-point sling.

The iron sights of the CM.106A are removable flip-up aperture sights which mount to the upper 20mm Picatinny rail. These sights are constructed from high-density polymer and are fully adjustable for both windage and elevation without the need for tools, allowing for simple and quick sight adjustments in the field. These sights are spring-assisted, meaning they still need manually raising to deploy but will snap into place with minimal effort and are generally regarded as more reliable than auto-deploying spring-loaded sights, which can get caught and not fully deploy.

The rear sight provides the choice of two apertures for aiming, with a fine aperture for long-range shooting and a wider aperture for up close and personal work and for shooting in low light. You can select between these two apertures by folding the apertures over, which will rotate the piece by 180 degrees and bring the alternate aperture into view. The windage adjustment dial is also found on the right side of the rear sight and can be turned without tools to move the aperture from left to right. The front sight uses a fine front blade constructed from steel which can be raised and lowered to make elevation adjustments using the drum below the sight blade itself. The design of both the front and rear sight includes protective wings at either side, protecting the aperture and front sight blade from damage in case the rifle takes a bump or scrape.

Moving rearwards we arrive at the receiver of the CM.106A, which is constructed from robust alloy with a hard wearing matt black finish. The receiver is very similar to the standard M4/AR15 receiver, with some interesting aesthetic twists from CYMA and a new, 9mm sized lower receiver. Over on the left side, we can see the ejection port, which features a new shortened dust cover with an integrated mock shell deflector, faithfully indicating the 9mm chambering of a real AR-9 and furthering the realism provided by the CM.106A. To the rear of the dust cover, we can find an enlarged and angled forward assist bulge, with a realistic mock forward assist button. This button can be pressed but doesn't have any function other than added realism.

The charging handle can be found at the top rear of the receiver, as with other M4/AR15 based designs. The charging handle is constructed from alloy and includes a low profile latch to ensure the handle doesn't get snagged on your gear as you move. Pulling the charging handle back will open the dust cover on the right side, and lock back the mock bolt, which can be released again using the bolt release catch, found on the left side at the centre of the receiver. With the mock bolt locked to the rear, we can see the gear adjuster for the adjustable HOP-up unit inside. This device allows you to adjust the amount of backspin applied to your BBs, and tune the CM.106A for your preferred ammunition weight.

The fire selector lever can be found just above the pistol grip and provides 3 modes of fire; safe, semi-automatic and fully automatic. This fire selector is also mirrored on the opposite side, permitting ambidextrous operation and making the CM.106A a great choice for left-handed users. This fire selector also differs from the standard M4/AR15 style selector in that it features a reduced throw between modes of around 45°, allowing you to switch from safe to semi-auto much quicker than the standard M4/AR15 selector.

The magazine release can be found on the right side of the SMG, and similarly to an M4/AR15 AEG, sits comfortably within reach of the trigger finger for a right-handed user, and within reach of the support hand thumb for a left-handed user. This magazine release features enhanced pyramidal texture on its surface, offering superior gripping qualities when compared with the standard M4/AR15 mag release, ensuring that you never slip off this control when you need it.

To the rear of the magazine release, we can see a protrusion on either side surrounding the two pins in front of the fire selector. These are known as "anti-rotation links" and serve to prevent the pins holding the trigger group in a real M4/AR15 from walking out under the force of recoil. In Airsoft terms, these are purely aesthetic additions but also serve to add some custom flair and give the CM.106A the looks of a customised and optimised rifle built by professionals to a standard above "mil-spec" M4s.

The lower receiver includes an enlarged integrated trigger guard, offering faster access to the trigger for a gloved user and increasing the strength of the lower receiver by deleting the often problematic modular trigger guard system of the original M4/AR15. Within the trigger guard, we can find a uniquely designed skeletonised trigger, which features a gently curved front face, and 4 ports on the rear of the trigger to keep it light and easy to pull quickly. This trigger is a nice compromise between military-style curved triggers and flat triggers optimised for swift shooting in a competitive setting and helps encourage an effective finger position whilst still allowing the trigger to be absolutely spammed to keep heads down at a critical moment.

The pistol grip of the CM.106A is the same ergonomic grip with a refined grip angle as is provided on their full-sized AEGs of the Platinum line-up. This grip has a more straight angle than a typical M4/AR15 pistol grip, making it more comfortable to use with the stock fully collapsed in CQB scenarios. The grip also features texture on each side, with linear grooves on the front and rear to provide a comfortable and effective grip, even when wearing gloves.

As we reach the rear of the receiver, we can find an ambidextrous sling plate sandwiched between the receiver and the castle nut. This plate is constructed from steel to provide the prerequisite strength for use with a single point sling. This sling point can also be combined with the QD socket on either the handguard or stock if you prefer a two-point sling to spread the weight more effectively. The castle nut present on the CM.106A is an enlarged design constructed from steel, complete with a knurled surface to make it quicker to remove after it has been loosened up with an AR15 armourers wrench.

Following the castle nut we come to the buffer tube, which is a standard M4/AR15 6 position tube and is compatible with any AEG spec replacement M4/AR15 stock should you feel the need for a style change. The stock currently installed on the buffer tube is CYMA's compact crane stock, which features a rubberised butt plate with diamond cross-hatching to ensure the stock does not slip from your shoulder in wet weather. This stock includes the extended cheek pieces of the standard crane stock, offering a more comfortable cheek weld when compared to more slimline stock designs. The battery compartment of the CM.106A can be found inside the buffer tube and is accessible with the stock removed. This can be achieved by lifting the stock adjustment lever, found on the bottom of the stock, and pulling it out as far as it will go, then sliding the stock off the buffer tube to the rear. Inside you will find a Deans battery connector, offering a low resistance and high-efficiency alternative to the usual mini-Tamiya connector found on Airsoft AEGs. For the CM.106A, we recommend an 11.1V 1300 mAh LiPo battery in stick configuration.

Internally the CM.106A is one of CYMA's finest offerings so far. The usual Platinum gearbox found in the other CYMA Platinum AEGs remains, with its pre-installed ETU and MOSFET, quick change spring system and reinforced shell, but now has additional upgrades installed, because, why not? The standard steel gearset has been replaced with a 13:1 ratio gearset running on 8mm bearing bushings, which combines with the impressive high-speed motor to provide a monstrous rate of fire, and exceptional trigger response. A silent piston head and silent cylinder head have also been installed, with a double O-ring on the cylinder head and a ball bearing on the piston head to help reduce the overall noise from the gearbox for a smoother sound and more efficient running. The spring guide is also equipped with ball bearings, reducing the stress on the rear of the gearbox and effectively resolving a known weakness in Airsoft gearbox designs.

To ensure your BBs fly straight and true, a 6.03mm tight bore inner barrel has been installed to provide exceptional accuracy and add to the superb air seal qualities of the platform. The addition of a tight bore barrel should also grant the CM.106A an impressive range, especially for such a compact AEG!

So, for those mulling over a G&G ARP-9, a King Arms PDW SBR, or a Classic Army X-9, your choice just got much more difficult! CYMA's offering is uniquely styled, so if one of the above doesn't quite hit the mark for you, perhaps the CM.106A will. This AEG would be ideal for any skirmisher looking for a compact weapon for CQB or a sniper sidearm and want something a little more bespoke looking than an SMG-5 or more traditional SMG design.
