Airsoft AEG Motors: Long Shaft or Short Shaft?

Airsoft AEG Motors: Long Shaft or Short Shaft?

Airsoft Motor Types

There are two common motor types used for Airsoft AEGs and a handful of specific motor types found in more unique AEG platforms. The "Long Shaft" and "Short Shaft" motors are the most common and are used in 99% of Airsoft AEGs. Read on for details on compatibility and which type your AEG requires!

Long Shaft Motor

Warhead Industries Ronin Brushless Motor; Long ShaftThis is the most common motor type used for Airsoft AEGs and Long Shaft motors are generally found in M4/AR-15, SMG-5/MP5, G3 and P90 AEG platforms. This type of motor can be identified by its extended motor shaft and shaft cover which protrudes from the housing.

Short Shaft Motor

Warhead Industries Base Brushless Motor; Short ShaftThe Short Shaft Motor is the second most prolific type, found in AR36, AK, AUG and SG55x AEGs and usually housed in a motor cage attached to the bottom of the gearbox shell. This type of motor can be identified by its lack of an extended protruding shaft, though the housing itself is the same size as the Long Shaft motor.

Ares/Secutor Slim Motors

Specna Arms DARK MATTER™ Brushless Motor; Long SlimThis type of motor is found exclusively in certain Ares and Secutor AEGs, designed to allow for a slimmer pistol grip design closer to the real M4/AR-15 dimensions. If you want to use a standard long shaft motor in your Slim motor-equipped AEG you can but you will need to swap the pistol grip for a standard M4/AR-15 AEG type.
