Tokyo Marui Saiga-12K Gas Blowback Shotgun

The Saiga-12 is an iconic Russian shotgun. Based on the patterned Kalashnikov (AK) series of rifles and named after the Saiga Antelope, a native species to Russia. Its silhouette matches an Ak-style rifle but we can assure you that this is nothing like another AK variant, this is so much better. It does take some of the more useful things from AK rifles though, the iconic enlarged lever fire selector and side rail have transferred from the Kalashnikov onto the receiver of this Saiga-12K.

Since its inception in the 1990s, this shotgun has made quite a journey around the world, being seen in the hands of Egyptian Special Operations Police, USA's Swat teams and the French RAID elite tactical police force. It was also used by civilians for hunting purposes, a truly iconic shotgun.

Starting with the front of this superb shotgun, we find the wide outer barrel and thread protector. The barrel has a diameter of 25mm, this keeps it true to the iconic silhouette and also allows the tri-barrels to fit inside easily. The thread protector comes attached to the Saiga-12K Shotgun but can be twisted off counter-clockwise if you have an alternative muzzle device that would attach to such a large outer barrel.

Moving rearwards down the long exposed portion of the 16-inch outer barrel we eventually reach the handguard. It is constructed from a high-density polymer, built to withstand the unrelenting nature of an Airsoft skirmish. It features raised diamond checkering on either side of it, to maximise handling and grip, especially when dealing with the dedicated, ultra-realistic blowback system that Tokyo Marui have installed in this shotgun.

The handguard features a sling point on the bottom which pairs with the rear sling point found on the right-hand side of the stock. Sitting atop the handguard and gas tube, we find the shotgun bead-style iron sight. This is a very unique sight both in its look and how to adjust it. The bead itself is a glorious gold and the elevation is adjusted using the rotating dial which sits beneath it. Just note that if you twist the dial too much to raise the elevation, it unscrews and falls out.

Moving on to the receiver, the upper part is constructed from stamped steel and the lower is alloy. It matches the AK receiver almost identically. The fire selector is the iconic AK extended paddle except the full auto setting is absent. This part is also constructed from steel and when in the top position, the shotgun is on safe and the trigger is locked. When the fire selector is pushed down it will click into position and the shotgun is now in semi-auto mode and ready to shoot.

The extended AK-style charging handle is found on the right side of the shotgun, it is very satisfying to pull back and release, feeling very realistic. On the left side of the receiver, there is an AK side rail. It keeps this shotgun true to the AK silhouette and is also useful if you intend to mount a red dot sight or similar to your Saiga-12K Shotgun. The Ak side rail is a little outdated these days but there are rail adapters that allow you to have a section of 20mm Picatinny rail that sits above the receiver.

Next, we come to the side-folding stock, which is constructed from high-density polymer and is extremely hard-wearing. It has a fixed length but can be folded to the left side of the shotgun by pressing the button found on the left side of the receiver, just in front of the stock. This defeats the locking mechanism and allows you to fold your stock to the receiver, where there is a tab that the stock clips to, to keep it secured in place. To lock the stock back into its normal position, push the button found on the alloy butt plate, this unlocks the stock from the receiver and allows it to be locked back into its regular place.

Internally this shotgun has some of the most premium parts available on the market, boasting three 6.03mm inner barrels and an exclusive blowback system that uses a large 19mm piston to give it a realistic kickback, the Saiga-12K Shotgun is an absolute treat to fire. This shotgun uses a proprietary magazine, the one included with the platform holds 45 BBs meaning you get 15 shots before you need to reload. The magazine also features a temperature stick on the internal part of the magazine. After removing its polymer shell you can see the temperature of the internal gas reservoir, allowing you to check the performance level of your magazine at a brief glance. The magazine also features a built-in auto-stop system that halts firing when the magazine is empty, encouraging you to reload promptly.
