Full description

Description

The Nuprol Pioneer Defender is well established as one of the better options for a newcomer due to its robust, lightweight, and forward-thinking design. The Defender has all you will need internally to hold your own in a skirmish with its snappy trigger response and excellent accuracy, the likes of which are usually reserved for upgraded AEGs with a lot of money put into them. The solid internals are housed in a majority polymer exterior with a Crane battery stock to provide ample battery space, whether you use a LiPo battery or you prefer a NiMh, and a quad 20mm railed handguard with plenty of space to add any accessories you need, including vertical foregrips, tactical flashlights, and PEQ laser units.

This combination of a solid set of internals with a highly modular and flexible external setup is what makes the Defender ideal for a new player. Being fully compatible with M4/AR15 AEG externals, the Defender can be dressed up however you like should you find inspiration in the future and want to replicate a real-world AR15, such as the US Army's M4A1 or the UKSF's L119A1. The guys at Nuprol have hit the nail on the head with this one; if you like your Defender the way it is you don't need to add or change anything to compete, but if down the line you find you want the "MK.18 CQBR" look, it doesn't mean you need a new gun!

Starting at the tip of the barrel, we can find a blue polymer M4/AR15 birdcage flash hider, which conceals the 14mm CCW male threads on the alloy outer barrel. This means if you want to add a tracer unit or suppressor you can, simply by removing the grub screw in the flash hider, and unscrewing it. This part is in VCRA compliant blue, but can be removed and replaced with a realistic coloured muzzle accessory without breaching VCRA, as long as you do not change the stock, handguard or pistol grip.

The outer barrel of the Defender is 10.5 inches in length, giving the Defender a short and manoeuvrable front end for cornering and engaging multiple targets quickly, whilst still having enough length in the inner barrel for some decent accuracy at long range. The flip-up front sight/gas block attaches directly to the barrel, saving room on the rails for other accessories and providing a realistic gas block and gas tube setup many other affordable M4/AR15 AEGs lack. This front sight is styled after the USMC's SAM-R foldable front sight and can be deployed without using tools simply by lifting it up, where it will lock under spring tension. To fold the front sight back down requires no buttons or tools, just push it down and it will lock back down and out of the way. The sight provides an adjustable front blade which is protected on either side by protective wings, preventing an inadvertent knock from damaging the sight blade.

Moving rearwards we come to the 20mm Picatinny quad railed handguard, which is styled after the Knights Armament RAS II. The handguard features an integrated 10mm rail riser to provide an ideal mounting position for a red dot sight, particularly for full face mask users who require a slightly raised sight for perfect alignment. The rail riser also provides additional rigidity by bridging the connection between the handguard and the receiver, preventing any rotational movement, and giving the Defender a rock-solid feel. This handguard also provides a 20mm rail interface at the 3, 6, 9, and 12 o'clock positions, allowing for any Picatinny rail compatible accessories to be added if the mission suits it or the user requires it. The handguard is constructed from high-density polymer, and is pre-dyed in VCRA compliant blue providing a consistent finish which will not wear over time like even our fantastic two tone paint jobs eventually do!

Next up we reach the receiver, which is of a standard and instantly recognizable M4/AR15 configuration with controls laid out in a considerate and ergonomic manner, allowing the Defender to be manipulated quickly and instinctively, even by new users. The fire selector lever can be found just above the pistol grip, on the left side of the AEG. The selector provides 3 modes of fire, SAFE, SEMI, and AUTO, with a 90-degree throw between each. The fire modes are helpfully marked in bold recessed text on the receiver, and the selector switch locks positively into each with the help of texture on its surface to guarantee you have a good grip on this important control.

The magazine release can be found on the right side of the receiver, lying well within reach of a right handed user's trigger finger, and accessible for a left handed user using the support hand thumb. The mag release is protected from accidental drops by the "mag catch fence" which is a raised area moulded into the receiver surrounding the magazine release. This means if have to take cover in a tight spot and your Defender ends up brushing against your gear, the magazine will probably stay put, avoiding any embarrassment and missed opportunities for kills!

The mock bolt release catch can be found in the centre of the left side of the receiver, and can be used to release the mock bolt after the HOP-up has been adjusted. To adjust the HOP-up, simply pull back the charging handle, found at the top rear of the receiver, and the dust cover on the right side will open, locking the mock bolt carrier back. Inside the ejection port, we can find the gear adjustable HOP-up unit, which can be adjusted by turning the large gear, adding or reducing the backspin applied to each BB. This can be tuned for BBs of various weights, but we recommend 0.25g BBs for optimum range and stability in flight. With this adjustment complete, you can hit the "ping pong paddle" bolt catch, and the mock bolt will return to position with a satisfying "clack".

The pistol grip of the Defender is an M16A2/M4A1 style pistol grip, with diamond checkering on either side and linear texture on the back strap to provide excellent gripping qualities whether you wear gloves or not. This pistol grip features a finger ridge to help you keep hold of the rifle and prevent the grip from slipping out of your hands when held in a single hand. As previously mentioned, once your VCRA defence is sorted you can swap this out to whatever AEG M4/AR15 pistol grip you prefer thanks to the Defender's considerate design.

Across the top of the upper receiver, we can find a 20mm Picatinny rail providing a mounting platform for red dot sights for fast target acquisition or telescopic sights for long-range work. As it comes, the Defender is equipped with a flip up rear iron sight, with a precise aperture which can be adjusted for elevation and windage, without any tools. To raise and lower the rear sight, simply turn the textured drum below the aperture, and to move the sight left and right you can rotate the drum on the right of the sight base to achieve a perfect zero.

At the rear of the receiver, we can find the ambidextrous CQD style sling plate which is constructed from steel to guarantee the part never fails under normal use. A single-point sling can be added to either side of this plate right away, but with a 20mm front sling point added the Defender can also be set up for a two-point sling, spreading the weight a bit more and allowing the Defender to be more easily carried on your back. To the rear of the sling plate we can find an M4/Ar15 6 position buffer tube, which is constructed from alloy and provides home to the Defenders Crane battery stock. The buffer tube allows the crane stock to be adjusted to any of 6 different positions, allowing the Defender to be set up for any body type, and used with the stock collapsed all the way for tight quarters. To adjust the stock, simply press the rear part of the adjustment lever at the bottom of the stock, and set the stock to your desired length by pulling/pushing it back and forth along the buffer tube with the adjustment lever held down. This crane stock also features QD sling sockets in either side which can be used for an alternative sling setup if you prefer.

The battery compartment of the Defender is found within the crane stock and can be accessed by removing the rubber butt plate. This can be achieved by pushing the two protruding tabs at the toe of the stock together, and then through the stock to the rear, after which the butt plate can be pulled downwards, and removed. With the butt plate removed, you can remove the battery compartment plug, and insert your battery into the "cheeks" of the stock, connecting up the mini-Tamiya connector found inside the buffer tube to your battery. Replacing the battery compartment plug, then reattaching the butt pad will see you ready to let rip with your Defender!

So, for any new player who likes the look of Airsoft's most popular platform, the M4/AR15, you couldn't ask for a more user friendly and future-proof way to start the sport. The Defender is fully compatible with the vast majority of Airsoft AEG M4/AR15 magazines, including high capacity magazines and drum magazines if you like a bit of spray and pray! The reinforced gearbox with quick change spring system provides a bomb-proof internal setup with the flexibility to be upgraded with minimal technical know-how (check your local skirmish site limits first!), and the 6.03 tight bore inner barrel ensure your BB will fly straight and true, as long as you do your part!

Good starter rifle with plenty of room for upgrades. Did not come with a battery so make sure you have one before purchase. Very solid and a good mix of metal and polymer.
