If you are looking to try your hand at sniping, but want something which matches the modern, modular aesthetic of your primary AEG, the M66 will fit the bill! This spring powered bolt action sniper rifle uses the impressive Tokyo Marui M40 internal system, combined with seriously mould-breaking features like its folding adjustable stock, adjustable pistol grip, QD sling points across the entire rifle, and aggressively styled 2-port muzzle brake. The icing on the cake? This rifle offers a convertible bolt handle straight from the factory, allowing the handle to be installed on either side of the rifle for both left and right-handed use.

Description

Double Eagle has been producing Airsoft guns for many years now, generally aimed at newcomers to the sport, offering functional AEGs, shotguns, and sniper rifles in unique styles and for a great price. More recently, Double Eagle has stepped outside of its old market to provide high-end AEGs with extremely advanced features and build quality to rival the old high-end brands. The Double Eagle M66 is the first sniper rifle from their new line catering to the more experienced and demanding Airsofter, and boy has it impressed us! The metals used in its construction are beautifully finished, and consistent across the rifle, and the polymer of the chassis is textured, indicating fibre reinforcement. This rifle is built like a tank, and looks a bit like one too with that beastly muzzle brake!

The M66 Sniper rifle is a close reproduction of the well loved "Pro 700" stock, combined with a highly advanced modern precision rifle action. This makes the M66 one of the most cutting edge sniper rifle designs out there, jam-packed with awesome features which would usually cost an arm and a leg to add to a more traditional sniper rifle if it is even possible!

Starting at the tip of the aluminium outer barrel, we are treated to a 2-port muzzle brake, which mounts to the 14mm CCW male threads on the barrel, giving the rifle an aggressive look. The inclusion of a 14mm CCW thread means you won't need to buy an adapter if you wish to add a tracer or suppressor to the M66, saving you money and the headache of figuring out which adapter to buy! The outer barrel is 18" long, and with the muzzle brake, it comes in at 20", keeping this rifle relatively manoeuvrable whilst giving it the accuracy needed to perform its task. The profile of the barrel is slightly tapered, matching real sniper rifles and their generally wider profiled barrel near the receiver which grants improved accuracy. This is purely an aesthetic feature in Airsoft, but goes a long way to giving the M66 its realistic appearance.

As we move rearwards we come to the chassis, which is a hybrid polymer/alloy build. Mounted to the top of the chassis, surrounding the outer barrel we can find a 20mm Picatinny rail mount. This mount is used for thermal optics in the real firearm, but can easily be used to add a PEQ laser unit for Airsoft purposes, either for the look or to use in combination with an optical sight to measure your minimum engagement distance. This mount attaches to the stock using 6 Allen head bolts, allowing you to remove the mount if you aren't using it and want to save some weight. Moving down the the chassis, we can note the M-LOK attachment slots on each side, and on the bottom. These allow you to mount M-LOK accessories, or add 20mm Picatinny rail sections for M-LOK and mount any accessory for 20mm rails, including bipods, which may be useful due to the hefty weight of this rifle. In front of the M-LOK slots, the M66 has two QD sling sockets, one on each side, providing sling mounting apparatus for a wide variety of sling setups using QD studs when coupled with the sockets at the middle, and rear of the chassis.

On the bottom of the stock, between the M-LOK attachment slots, we can find the HOP-up adjustment dial. This device allows you to adjust the amount of backspin given to your BBs, allowing heavier weights to be used when adjusted correctly, and providing improved consistency and wind resistance. The dial has helpful gauge markings surrounding it, and adjusts with an audible and tactile "click", locking your setting in place and allowing you to take note of which setting works best with which BB weight. This HOP design is based on the Tokyo Marui M40 system, and provides superb consistency and is capable of lifting some weighty BBs. As such, we recommend using 0.3g BBs and above for this rifle.

Next up, we reach the receiver, which is a new design with angular surfaces and a reprofiled mock ejection port, which is mirrored on either side to allow for aftermarket left-handed bolt handles to be added. This is a breath of fresh air compared to the standard VSR-10 receiver, which is styled after older variants of the M700 rifle and is prolific to the extent that it has become quite boring. The receiver is constructed from alloy, and has a 20mm Picatinny rail running across the top for the addition of a rifle scope, or another optical sight of your choice. Within the receiver, we can find the bolt/cylinder, which has had a bit of a style up itself! The M66 bolt is spiral fluted, giving the rifle a custom look and leaning into the "modern precision rifle" look amplified by the barrel and other furniture. At the bottom of the chassis, beneath the receiver, we can find the rifle's magazine well, which is constructed from alloy and protrudes from the polymer chassis slightly to provide a flared opening for easier reloads. The M66 uses the TM L96/M40 style feeding, and hides a loading ramp within the chassis to funnel BBs forwards and into your HOP chamber for loading. This gives the M66 a more realistic feed position than the JG BAR-10 and others, but means BBs can remain inside the action after the magazine has been removed. To release these BBs, simply press the small lever inside the magazine well after the magazine has been removed.

Now, if you were already impressed with the M66, prepare to have your mind blown! This rifle not only features an adjustable stock, allowing the cheek riser to be raised and lowered, and the length of pull to be extended to fit any size of human, but the pistol grip can also be adjusted! This is a feature which is usually found on real world precision rifles, and is intended to allow the shooter to precisely adjust the placement of their finger on the trigger for a consistent, repeatable trigger press. To adjust the position of the pistol grip, simply remove the base plate by squeezing the tabs at the bottom of the grip together, revealing the storage compartment and the grip adjustment screw. The adjustment screw requires an Allen key to loosen, but once that has been done the grip can be slid back and forth and tightened down into place when you find your perfect position. This feature is surely wasted on us Airsofters but shows the level of dedication Double Eagle have to not only mimicking the real Pro 700 stock, but providing ultimate flexibility and comfort too. For those with long fingers, you will certainly get some use out of this feature!

Before we move on, we should discuss the ambidextrous features of the M66. Put briefly, it is fully ambidextrous. The safety catch is similarly styled to the standard M700/VSR-10, sitting comfortably beneath your thumb allowing the safety to be removed before that perfect shot with minimal additional movement required. The difference is, this safety is also on the left side of the bolt, meaning no reaching over the bolt handle to safe the rifle for the wrong handers! Whilst we are discussing safeties (yawn) it is worth noting that the M66 has a cocked indicator, which protrudes from the rear of the bolt when the rifle is cocked. This is a useful feature, made even more useful by the fact that the indicator is coloured red, granting excellent visibility but also protruding significantly, allowing you to confirm that your rifle is cocked in low light or pitch dark. The magazine release is also ambidextrous, being a paddle-style release, but has texture on the rear face, allowing the magazine to be dropped free using just your trigger finger, freeing up your other hand to grab the next mag.

Moving on to the stock, we are granted one of the most adjustable and flexible sniper rifle stocks out there today! The stock can be folded to the side for storage and transportation, allowing this chonky boi of a rifle to fit in much smaller gun bags than one might think. The stock folds to the right side and locks in position using a spring detent, which can be overcome by simply pulling the stock open. To fold the stock, simply press the textured button on the steel stock hinge mechanism to release the lock. The stock also features an adjustable length of pull and an adjustable cheek riser. These parts can be adjusted to fit your body without tools, simply by rotating the dials on the stock itself. The dial on the lower part of the stock raises and lowers the cheek rest, and the dial behind the cheek rest adjusts the length of pull. With the cheek rest at the right height, you can lock in your setting using the smaller knurled thumb screw beneath the cheek rest. The butt plate is constructed from thick and sturdy rubberized polymer and has a linear texture to ensure the rifle stays firmly in your shoulder.

Performance-wise, the M66 is far from a slouch. Coming out of the box shooting around 460 FPS with a 0.2g BB, you would be forgiven for thinking that this rifle might be hard to cock. Think again! The bolt throw of the M66 is buttery smooth, and surprisingly light, allowing a fast follow-up shot when you need it while reducing strain on your arms. The HOP system being derived from the Tokyo Marui M40 means it sports all the VSR-10 HOP-up perks, but in a new centrally adjusted form which keeps the BBs going straight and true. TM compatibility is one of the most important things to look for in a sniper rifle, and will allow you to fine-tune the rifle with a plethora of aftermarket parts to be even more of a game dominator than it already is!

So, for the southpaw snipers, and for the M-LOK lovers, or anyone who appreciates a well-built Airsoft sniper rifle full of considerate, innovative features, the M66 from Double Eagle is the perfect platform!
