The Original EMG DDM4® PDW SBR AEG

Externally, the DDM4® PDW is built as an almost perfect match for the real DDM4® PDW, down to its perfectly replicated DD MFR XL M-LOK handguard, Grip-n-Rip charging handle and DD marked receiver, dust cover and mock bolt carrier. If you like Daniel Defense builds, this is probably the ultimate DDM4® PDW AEG!

Starting at the front, we can find a perfectly replicated DD linear compensator, matching the OEM muzzle device of the real DDM4® PDW perfectly. The linear comp functions similarly to a sound amplifier when it comes to Airsoft, giving this compact platform a psychological warfare advantage up close thanks to its booming muzzle report. If you're more of a sneaky skirmisher or you need a tracer for an instinct-aiming advantage, you can replace the linear comp with a 14mm CCW muzzle device of your choice, including tracer units, suppressors and alternative flash hiders.

Immediately behind the linear compensator, we come to the flawlessly replicated DD MFR XL handguard, measuring 6 inches in overall length. The handguard boasts M-LOK negative space attachment slots at the 3, 6 and 9 o'clock positions with additional slots at the upper offset angles, ready for M-LOK accessories.

The upper surface features a 20mm Picatinny rail which runs back to meet the receiver rail seamlessly, allowing for optical sights of practically any length to be mounted despite the short overall length of the DDM4® PDW. Also present on the handguard are a pair of QD sling sockets, allowing for QD sling swivels to be mounted. On the top rail, we are treated to a set of flip-up aperture iron sights, a compact set well suited to the DDM4® PDW design. The sights can be deployed by hand, and are fully adjustable for both windage and elevation.

Next up, we reach the receiver which is a stunning showcase of licenced Daniel Defense trademarks, flawlessly engraved and a perfect match for the real DDM4® PDW. The left side of the upper receiver also includes a 300BLK calibre marking in high-vis white laser engraving, together with the stylised DDM4® logo at the rear. The dust cover, found on the right side, also features DD markings and is constructed from high density polymer to match modern weight-reduced dust covers found on the latest H&K HK416 rifles as well as Daniel Defense's DDMK18.

The charging handle is located at the top rear of the receiver, and as we might expect, is a licenced Daniel Defense design. Known as the "Grip-N-Rip" charging handle. The handle is ambidextrous, with enlarged latches on either side allowing for flawless functionality whether you wear gloves or not.

Pulling the charging handle back will pop open the dust cover and reveal the mock bolt carrier with its DD trademarks. The mock bolt carrier will lock to the rear, allowing access to the rotary HOP-up unit. This unit is constructed from alloy for increased strength, allowing you to tune the DDM4® PDW for your chosen ammo weight. Once your adjustment is complete, slap the "ping pong paddle" bolt catch on the left side to send the mock bolt home with a satisfying "clank".

The fire selector switch is located on the left side of the receiver, just above the pistol grip and is a standard M4A1 mil-spec design with a textured surface for optimal traction in wet weather. The selector provides 3 modes of fire; safe, semi-automatic and fully automatic, with a 90-degree throw between each mode. The selector switch is one of the best aspects of the M4 design, easily accessible and fast to use with enough distance between modes that it isn't easy to knock out of position inadvertently.

The magazine release button is over on the right side of the magazine well, a standard M4/AR-15 push button release but compatible with aftermarket ambidextrous alternatives. The button is surrounded by a raised protrusion in the receiver, known as the "magazine release fence" and designed to prevent the mag release from accidentally being pressed as the DDM4® PDW rubs against your gear. Another great aspect of the AR-15 design, the magazine release is easily accessible from a firing grip, making for scorchingly fast reloads as long as you practice!

At the rear of the receiver, we come to the PDW sliding stock, the one area where this design deviates from the real DDM4® PDW. Though the real DDM4® PDW stock looks fantastic, it is in fact a pistol brace and would have no battery space whatsoever in its Airsoft form. With this excuse in mind, we forgive EMG for this minor compromise! The stock offers 6 positions of adjustment, just like a normal M4 stock, and allows the DDM4® PDW to fit into positively tiny gun bags and cases.

The adjustment lever is on the right side, taking the form of a steel textured button for maximum strength and wet weather functionality. Holding the lever down will allow you to slide the PDW stock into your position of choice, allowing for almost any body type. Pre-installed on the Bolster Tuned DDM4® PDW is a battery extension unit which we wholeheartedly recommend you use. Without the BEU, there is only space for an absolutely tiny battery inside the PDW stock, but with it installed, you can just about fit an 11.1V 1000mAh LiPo battery in stick configuration inside, perfect for an advanced high-power-draw platform like this!

To install your chosen battery, hold the stock adjustment lever and the steel bar on the opposite side and slide the stock bars and butt plate off to the rear. With this done, you can unscrew the buffer tube cap to reveal the Deans battery connector inside. If you're using your BEU, you won't be able to collapse the stock into its most compact position but is worth the compromise to have easily sourced batteries which last far longer.

Internal Upgrades and Tuning by Bolster Armouries

As with previous Bolster Tuned builds (formerly known as Patrol Base X Gate ASTER edition), this isn't your usual upgraded AEG. The Bolster Armouries tech team fully disassemble each of these AEGs down to every screw, bolt and bushing to perfectly tune the internals, polish the piston tracks and bearing holes, shim the gears to absolute perfection and replace parts to address the weak points in the original platform. The Bolster techs treat these AEGs like they are building them for themselves, and if it doesn't pass their rigorous checks, which include a 60m accuracy test, it goes back to the bench for more work.

The Gate ASTER V2 MOSFET system functions as the brain of the Bolster Tuned DDM4® PDW, offering far more functions than the usual CYMA Platinum MOSFET present in the original. The ASTER boasts programmable fire controls through the Gate Control Station app, Gate Blu-Link or Gate USB Link, adjustable pre-cocking for a ferocious trigger response in semi-auto, cycle timing control, adaptive active braking, adjustable trigger sensitivity, and voltage control, all of which combine to give this gorgeously built licenced replica a wealth of functionality that is hard to beat.

Working in concerto with the ASTER is the Gate QUANTUM trigger, a CNC machined flat trigger finished in discrete gloss black. The QUANTUM is specifically designed to be used with the ASTER, boasting adjustable trigger sensitivity with 470 different settings to choose from and over 60 settings just for the first millimetre of movement. 

The trigger chosen for the Bolster Tuned DDM4® PDW is the 1A1 variant, a smooth-faced flat trigger with a slight forward angle and a wide trigger blade. This gives you the speed benefits of a flat trigger while keeping your finger firmly in place, avoiding slipping off while you slap away to keep the enemy at bay!

The motor installed is the Warhead Base 27K Brushless Motor, offering a super speedy motor which uses high strength, SH-rated Neodymium magnets. Being a brushless motor, the Warhead Base simply doesn't heat up as the only friction generated inside is with the air, keeping this cool and allowing you to let off some seriously long bursts guilt-free. The Warhead moves the Bolster Tuned DDM4® PDW up to the next level of Airsoft performance and puts it hot on the heels of the full-fat Bolster Armouries ONYX, ARKOSE, ATLAS and OBIRE builds.

To ensure reliable feeding at its new astonishing rate of fire, the Bolster team installed the FPS Softair Carbon Fibre Reinforced Tappet Plate paired with an HS Delayer Chip. Ideal for a precise build which requires perfect nozzle alignment, the FPS tappet plate is constructed from carbon fibre-reinforced nylon polymer which has the perfect amount of rigidity and flex without being vulnerable to sudden fractures under heavy load as a conventional polycarbonate tappet might.

The tappet plate is an essential part when it comes to ensuring the AEG's internals are timed correctly and that feeding is smooth and constant. The FPS Tappet has an absolutely flawless shape and the perfect amount of strength while avoiding being so hard it becomes brittle. Its carbon fibre reinforced polymer gives it the edge in durability over every other tappet on the market. 

The pre-installed 13:1 ratio CNC steel gear set runs on Bolster Armouries EZO Bearings to guarantee the perfect combination of strength and low friction. The EZO bearings allow the high-speed gears to spin freely at the tremendous rate provided by the Warhead Brushless Motor with minimal chances of failure, all while reducing stress on the gearbox shell and gear axles.

The Bolster team cannot touch an AEG without installing their favourite HOP-up rubber, the legendary "Prommy Purple". Also known as the Laylax/Prometheus Purple HOP-up rubber and nub, this setup is based on the original Tokyo Marui design but comprised of more hard-wearing and temperature-resistant materials and is a big part of what allows the Tuned DDM4® PDW to absolutely destroy other compact AEGs when it comes to long-range performance. 

Finally, we're on to the ergonomic upgrades. The team chose the PTS Syndicate EPG Pistol Grip to replace the original pistol DD Tornado grip. While the original was a comfortable design and very authentic, the PTS grip is constructed from higher quality polymer and allows the motor to be adjusted more precisely. 

The EPG is constructed from Dupont Zytel, a high-strength, abrasion and impact-resistant thermoplastic polyamide/nylon, making it a significant step up from other high density polymers, even beating out the original EMG/CYMA pistol grip. With comfortable dot texturing on either side and crackle texture on the front strap and backstrap, the EPG is the perfect enhancement to ensure you maintain a positive grip on your DDM4® PDW and allow the Warhead motor to engage properly with the high-speed 13:1 gearset.
