Umarex H&K HK416 A5 Gen.3 GBBR

The UMAREX HK416 is a skirmish-ready, full metal gas blowback assault rifle fully licensed by Heckler & Koch and it's here to transform your airsoft skirmishes to give you some of the most satisfying shooting experiences available.

Starting towards the front end of the gun, the HK416 comes equipped with a birdcage style flash hider which is compatible with most QD style suppressors, fitted to a 14mm CCW outer barrel (Before removing this flash hider, please take out the grub screw) Above the outer barrel you will find a notched front style cylinder with the lettering "N" & "S" - This is actually a Gas Block adjustment system on the real HK416 to allow the operator to select "N" for normal firing such as when in use with flash hiders/muzzle breaks and using supersonic ammunition, and "S" for suppressed mode which of course is for subsonic ammunition and use with sound moderators. Cleverly enough though this isn't just a cool piece of mock furniture, this actually doubles as a HOP-up adjustment tool, simply bring your hand to the front end of the handguard and turn the cylinder switch either left or right to apply or reduce hop, we personally find this to be a stellar design and is much easier than having to rack back your bolt and remove your hands from the fire controls.

The handguard is equipped with 20mm Picatinny rails at the 3, 6, 9 and 12 o'clock positions, and also has an integral flip-up front sight built in. The upper rail meets the receiver rail in a sleek monolithic manner, and thanks to it being keyed into the receiver there is absolutely no chance of handguard wobble or rotation developing over time. This is one of the best refinements of the HK416 system and improves the structural integrity of the base M4/AR15 considerably.

Every second rail slot of the handguard is numbed with recessed digits, just like the real HK416 A5 handguard. This means if you like to swap and change accessories between guns you can make a note of the slot number you use, and remount your accessories in the same spot every time. Punctuating the 20mm Picatinny rails we can see the H&K style handguard vents which give the 416 its recognisable H&K style, being similar in shape to those found on earlier HK416 rifles, the G36 series and the H&K UMP.

Moving on to the receiver we can see the lineage of the HK416. M4/AR15 users will feel right at home with these controls, but there are several additions not present on most M4s that make the HK416 stand out. The fire selector for example is located just above the pistol grip as it would be on an M4, but this selector is redesigned with a wider contact surface for easier actuation in wet weather conditions and is mirrored on the right side to allow for left-handed use.

The magazine release also sports an ambidextrous design, as it is positioned on either side of the magazine well. The mock bolt release is functional in that it will allow you to release the mock bolt after HOP-up adjustment. The left side catch is the conventional "ping pong paddle" style but is slightly enlarged, with the right side catch being a small tab a little above the magazine release, which can be actuated with the trigger finger. Pressing either of these catches when the mock bolt is locked back will release it with a satisfying clack, and is a lot of fun to actuate.

Fully ambidextrous controls have obvious plus points, although on most rifles that sport ambi controls is the increased likelihood of snagging and accidentally pressing a button when your rifle rubs against your kit as you move. Not so with this model as the HK416 A5 has remedied this issue by adding raised protrusions on the receiver to protect the controls from accidental use. Similarly, the "magazine release fence" found surrounding the magazine release, prevents any accidental snags in addition to encouraging better thumb positioning and allowing your thumb to "rest" against it. These features are proof that H&K are absolute masters of rifle design - every detail is well-thought-out from a practical perspective to allow for superior rifle operation.

Being officially licensed by H&K via Umarex, this HK416 A5 boasts full realistic H&K trademarks across the entirety of its externals. The left-hand side of the upper receiver features a small H&K logo, which also appears on the mock bolt carrier on the right-hand side. The lower receiver is also marked with a deeply engraved and prominent H&K logo, with the model name "HK416" and the calibre indicated beneath. On the right side of the mag well the trademarks read "Licensed Trademark of Heckler and Koch GMBH Germany", which is the only marking which is not present on the real HK416 A5, though this was included for legal reasons. The stock also has an embossed H&K logo on either side, and the fire selector modes are indicated with the classic H&K red and white bullet pictograms, a prerequisite for any H&K rifle which everyone can recognise.

The HK416 brings some real ergonomic treats, namely in the form of the pistol grip, which is H&Ks latest design with a refined grip angle with the usual trigger ridge removed for greater comfort for a  range of hand sizes. Either side and the back of the grip features a speckled texture that provides a fantastic grip when gripped with or without gloves. The trigger guard is enlarged for fast access to the trigger with the trigger itself sporting the curved "mil-spec" style trigger, for an authentic look.

At the rear of the receiver, we can find an M4/Ar15 style 5-position buffer tube with the appropriate enlarged castle nut used on the real HK416 A5. Between the castle nut and receiver, we are treated to an ambidextrous sling plate which is the perfect location for mounting a sling point sling. There is also an additional sling slot on the stock, but this would be more useful when set up with a 20mm Picatinny sling mount (available separately) on the handguard if you prefer a two or three-point sling setup.

Moving rearwards, we come to the buffer tube and castle nut, which are both constructed from alloy, in keeping with the realistic weight and centre of balance the HK416 has. The HK416 A5s sliding stock is installed over the top of the buffer tbh, offering a snag-free design with a low profile adjustment lever located on the bottom, away from any potential hanging or loose sling, comms, cables or other obstructions.

The butt plate of the stock has a deep grooved chevron texture on its surface and is constructed from incredibly grippy rubber, which guarantees the HK416 A5 won't slip out of your shoulder when you are operating in bad weather conditions.

Let's not forget the main draw of this rifle; the gas blowback recoil. So not only is this beauty decorated in H&K branding and built to an astounding spec, it's also got a fully functioning recoil bolt system powered by the included H&K 30 Round Green Gas Airsoft Magazine. Now we've handled some gas blowback airsoft guns before but this UMAREX Heckler & Koch 416 really packs a punch! There's no drag, no waiting for the cycle to complete, no slow travelling with the bolt, this recoil system has been designed to imitate the real thing and HOT DAMN does it do a good job, as soon as your trigger releases the hammer you're in for a beating from the bolt as it throws itself into your shoulder with every shot, this really is the pinnacle of Airsoft immersion.
