Description

The Real FN P90

The FN Herstal P90 was designed in the early 90s in response to a NATO requirement for a compact weapon system and a new cartridge intended to replace the 9x19mm, commonly used in handguns. The new weapon and cartridge was intended to exceed the performance of the 9mm round, in both armour penetration and accuracy at longer ranges.

Despite the P90 and its 5.7x28mm cartridge being designed for behind the lines troops such as engineers and logistics troops, the PDW has mainly seen use with the SWAT teams of Police departments and Special Forces units around the world, ironically as a weapon for Direct action missions carried out by the most elite troops.

It was also adopted by the US Secret Service as a counter-assault weapon due to its compact size, high rate of fire, and 50 round magazine making it the ideal weapon for repelling an attack from a would-be assassin. The P90 is absolutely packed with features only just finding their way into more conventional firearms designs today, such as fully ambidextrous controls, downward ejection of spent cases, and majority polymer construction; essential for keeping the weapon light and true to its role as a PDW.

The fact that this futuristic PDW was designed over 30 years ago is a testament to the foresight of the design team at FN. The P90 was finally trialled in 2002 and came out on top against H&Ks MP7, but due to the contest being so close and a lack of agreement on the superior platform and cartridge, NATO went ahead and adopted nothing, deciding instead to stick with handguns in 9x19mm.

The Krytac EMG FN P90

Starting at the front end, we can see an accurate P90 flash hider, correctly depicting the most modern version of this muzzle device. A great start for realism! The flash hider attaches to the outer barrel via 14mm CCW male threads, which will allow any of the most common types of threaded accessories to be added; including tracer units, suppressors, and sound amplifiers. We're sure we have all seen a suppressed P90 - it is a match made in heaven!

The upper receiver assembly is constructed entirely from Aluminium, increasing strength whilst keeping the weight low to ensure the P90 remains manoeuvrable and easily pointed, as one would expect from a short bullpup design. On the left side of the upper receiver assembly, we can find beautifully engraved trademarks, licensed by FN Herstal themselves. The markings read: "P90 - cal 5.7x28", which matches well with the other trademarks moulded into the high-density fibre-reinforced polymer lower receiver assembly. The upper receiver provides a single side Picatinny rail, which can be swapped to either side, depending on how you like to set up your P90. This rail is ideal for a tactical flashlight or laser unit coupled with a pressure switch.

The top rail is removable and includes built-in emergency backup sights, which can be viewed through the rail itself, whether you have an optic mounted or not. The upper also has two sets of additional backup sights which are machined as part of the assembly, and are intended for use when a P90 integral reflex sight is mounted, appearing on either side of the top rail.

The charging handles can be found just below the upper assembly, and are mirrored on either side. Unlike most other P90s on the market, the charging handles on the Krytac P90 work to actuate the HOP door, which can be found within the thumbhole of the stock. This solves one of the major complaints about the original P90 AEG design; that the HOP was very hard to access. The HOP door can also be opened by hand and is helpfully enlarged to allow those of us with sausage fingers or those who wear gloves to adjust the HOP easily.

The lower body of the Krytac P90 is another feature which sets this P90 apart from the cheaper versions. The material used for this part is a high-density fibre reinforced polymer. This gives the Krytac P90 a smooth, textured surface, and an overall feeling of quality. The lower body shows no signs of flex, creaks or squeaking, and feels surprisingly strong given its low weight.

Like the real P90, the lower body is a two-part clamshell design, held together with steel Allen bolts. There are more FN Herstal markings to be found here; within the designation window on the left side, we can see "Fabrique Nationale Herstal BELGIUM" in large text, with "Licensed by FN Herstal" discretely moulded below.

As mentioned, the HOP of this P90 is similar to more conventional P90 designs, though it can now be accessed by pulling the charging handles to the rear, or by opening the HOP window manually, which can be found within the thumbhole grip. The HOP unit is of the standard P90 configuration but with an enhanced rotary dial, providing audible and tactile clicks which allow the HOP to be set more accurately and prevent the setting from being lost under the vibration of firing.

The P90 has a rather unconventional setup as far as the grip and handguard go, providing an integrated vertical grip with handstop for the support hand, and an angled thumbhole grip for the firing hand. This configuration keeps the shooter's hands close together, and may initially feel strange but provides some advantages which other more conventional designs lack. The grip being so close to the muzzle allows the P90 to be more accurately pointed; steering the barrel of this PDW is a lot closer to just pointing your fingers at the target, making the P90 easy to shoot accurately and minimizing the chances of oversteering and going past your target.

The angled thumbhole grip, coupled with the top feeding arrangement allows the P90 user to get very very low when in the prone position, giving the user the advantage of cover where there normally is none! Being able to reload without rotating your primary when lying down can be an invaluable advantage, and one the enemy will not expect! The magazine release is perfectly positioned to facilitate this; it can be found at the top of the receiver, just in front of the shooter's face, and is easily accessible from either side.

The fire selector lever for the P90 can be found below the trigger and is a rotary design which is accessible from either side, adding to the P90's already exceptional ergonomics, and pairing well with its other ambidextrous features. The safe position, denoted by a white "S" provides a trigger lock, the "1" position, denoting semi-automatic provides a rapid single shot, and the fully-automatic position, denoted with an "A" provides a two-stage trigger; with a short press firing a single shot, and a long extended press firing fully automatic. Visually identifying these positions is aided through the coloured markings, with both the dangerous modes marked in red, and safe being marked in white.

Krytac has also carried out some much-needed enhancement on the original P90 trigger design, which has the reputation of being long and mushy when compared with other triggers, the details of which we will discuss later. At the rear of the P90 we can find a rubber butt plate, which can be removed using the button at its base, providing access to the P90's battery compartment, and its internals. Also present is a sling slot in the lower body, providing an appropriate mounting solution for a P90 sling or the addition of a P90 QD sling adaptor.

One of the many features which mark this P90 out as the ultimate AEG P90 is its "stop firing on empty" feature. The Krytac P90 is compatible with standard Tokyo Marui style P90 magazines, but when using the enhanced Krytac Magazine the P90 can sense when its ammunition supply has been expended, cutting off the trigger to let you know its reload time. This can be extremely functional in-game, and will prevent those moments where you aren't sure if you are shooting BBs at the enemy or just harmless air.

Functions such as this elevate the Krytac P90 above the average functional AEG to the level of the Systema PTW, Tokyo Marui NGRS and Scorpion EVO, which are amongst the few advanced AEGs which include the "stop firing on empty" function. Krytac's enhanced P90 magazine also features a 50 round limiter, allowing you to select between a massive 200 round capacity or 50 rounds for a realistic scenario, or if you like a challenge!

Internally the Krytac P90 really outshines the rest. The Krytac gearbox which powers this beast boasts a famous Krytac in-line MOSFET, 8mm bearings, steel gears, and a quick change spring system; allowing you to tune the AEG to perfectly meet the limits of your Skirmish site with ease. The HOP system within the P90 sports a rotary adjuster, providing fine adjustments and holding its setting perfectly under the vibration of firing. Improvements Krytac has made to the standard P90 AEG design, dating all the way back to the first Tokyo Marui P90 include an updated trigger system, an enlarged HOP window which can also be revealed by pulling the charging handles, and the ability to adjust the motor height without removing the gearbox.

The new trigger system features a light and quick to reset trigger, which has very little creep yet retains the original P90's dual-stage functionality; with a short press providing a single shot, and an extended press firing full auto. The trigger can also be adjusted, allowing the user to tune it for a very short press, or a long press if desired.

On the boring end of things, the Krytac P90 features the standard staples of a truly modern AEG, an automotive fuse and a deans battery connector, reducing resistance over the legacy standard fuse/mini-Tamiya connector combination and ensuring you get the most out of this high-performance setup. To ensure that the Krytac P90 can handle stronger springs the Gearbox has had its cylinder window corners radiused to reduce the chances that fatigue on the shell will cause damage. The gears are of 18:1 ratio, providing efficient smooth running and a killer rate of fire.

If you have been eyeing up a P90, but none of the other offerings has met the mark, this may well be the one. The plethora of advanced features, exceptional build quality and jaw dropping performance of the Krytac P90 affirm its position as the king of Airsoft P90 platforms. If this one isn't good enough, we don't know what is!
