  • High density polymer construction
  • Replicates the Japanese Police model
  • HK Claw-mount compatible receiver

If you're in the market for what is probably the most iconic SMG design the world has ever known but you want it cheap, the Jing Gong JG069 SMG-5J SMG AEG should suit you perfectly. This SMG-5 AEG replicates one of the most modern SMG-5 variants, the "J" model first issued to the Japanese Armed Police, and is constructed predominantly from high density polymer to keep the build light, agile and affordable.

Internally, the JG069 is based on the Tokyo Marui SMG-5 A5, meaning full compatibility with aftermarket upgrades for its basic yet functional alloy version 2 gearbox. All of the iconic SMG-5 details are present externally, including its claw-mount compatible receiver, tri-lug muzzle device and ambidextrous fire controls. If you need an SMG-5 in lightweight and cost-effective form, the Jing Gong JG069 SMG-5J SMG AEG is exactly that!

Description

Based on the iconic SMG we all know and love in its Japanese Police-issued form, the Jing Gong JG069 SMG-5J SMG AEG is constructed almost entirely from high density polymer with a matt finish, meaning this SMG-5 is one you won't have to hit the gym to run all day long. Equipped with a new style of retractable stock intended to improve shooter comfort, the SMG-5J was first wielded by the Japanese Armed Police (thus its -J suffix) but makes a fantastic piece to simulate later-issue US Navy SMG-5 variants.

The outer barrel, front sight, stock bars and controls are constructed from alloy to add strength where needed, though even with these additions, this SMG tips the scales at a minuscule 1.82KG. On the inside, we are treated a TM-compatible version 2 gearbox with steel 18:1 gears running on 7mm ball bearing bushings for reduced friction, increased ROF and a smoother gearbox sound.

Starting at the front, we have a quick detachable flash hider constructed from alloy and mounted to a threaded tri-lug muzzle device. This gives you the choice of running the SMG-5 in its modern configuration with the flash hider mounted, or in the more classic config with the tri-lug device only. Removing the flash hider is super simple; all you need to do is push the serrated locking latch out and rotate it into the slot in the flash hider, after which it can be removed.

The tri-lug device allows you to mount tri-lug compatible suppressors but these are quite rare. Fortunately, Jing Gong saw fit to provide 14mm CCW male threads at the tip of the tri-lug so you can mount any 14mm CCW threaded suppressor for the sneaky look or a tracer unit for an instinct-aiming advantage in CQB.

The muzzle device mounts to the front sight assembly which includes the front iron sight, protected on all sides with a protective ring, and a sling loop on the right side, ready to be paired with the rear sling point to mount a two-point sling. The front sight assembly and sling loop are constructed from alloy to provide ample strength to support the SMG-5 no matter what equipment you have mounted.

The handguard of this SMG-5 is the standard triangular handguard, boasting a comfortable shape designed to keep the muzzle under control with its tapered shape. This handguard may be a bit boring when compared to aftermarket RAS and flashlight-equipped handguards but is a big part of what makes the real steel version of this SMG so favoured among its operators.

Removing the handguard provides access to the battery compartment of the SMG-5J which allows for both NiMh and LiPo block batteries and is ideally sized for a 7.4V 1300mAh LiPo battery in nun-chuck/crane configuration for the easiest fit. To access the compartment, simply push the front handguard pin out and the handguard should come free, first forward and then down and off the platform. When reinstalling your handguard once the battery is inserted it is particularly important that you don't trap any wires between the handguard and receiver. As always, we advise taking care and not installing your battery in a hurry!

Above the handguard, we have what is known as the "cocking tube", complete with cocking handle and the "safety notch". This provides no function on an Airsoft AEG but is nonetheless included to keep this SMG-5 authentic to the real deal. Worth noting is that as fun as it is, we do not recommend doing the "HK slap" with this SMG as both the cocking tube and handle are polymer and may get damaged.

Moving rearwards we arrive at the receiver which follows the iconic SMG-5 format perfectly. The receiver is comprised of two parts, the section known as the “upper receiver” and the lower section, known as the “trigger pack”. The fire selector is present on either side of the trigger pack and offers 3 modes of fire; safe, semi-automatic and fully automatic, with a 45-degree throw between fire modes. Each fire mode is indicated with the ever-recognisable red and white bullet pictograms which first appeared on the “Navy” style SMG-5 trigger pack and now make their way onto most modern platforms in one form or another. Safe is indicated with a crossed-out projectile in white, semi with a single projectile in red and full auto is denoted with several red projectiles.

The grip itself is built into the trigger pack and is an ergonomic design with an enlarged trigger guard built in. This grip has been the subject of a lot of praise, and the shape and style match more modern platforms such as the AR36 and is widely credited with being the inspiration behind the highly popular MOE and MIAD grips for the M4/AR15. The trigger guard allows plenty of space for gloved shooters, and the trigger is a curved design matching the real SMG perfectly.

The magazine release is also ambidextrous, being a paddle-style release positioned just ahead of the trigger guard, making the SMG-5 A5 RAS a fine choice for right or left-handed shooters. There is also a secondary magazine release over on the right side, on the magazine well in a similar position to that of the M4/AR-15. This gives you the option of two different magazine release styles, though we prefer the ambidextrous paddle release as the AR style release is a bit further from the grip than on an M4 and can be harder to reach for those with smaller hands.

Running along either side of the receiver we can see a groove which is the track in which the sliding stock indexes, serving both to keep the stock tight into the weapon when retracted, reinforce the receiver and provide tracks for the bolt carrier to move along on the inside of the real thing. At the top, we have a pair of lugs which allow for an SMG-5/G3 claw optics mount to be added if you want to mount a red dot sight or scope to the SMG-5 A5 RAS. These lugs are compatible with both low profile and high profile options.

The rear iron sight is located at the back of the receiver and is a rotary drum diopter-style sight, just like the real thing. The sight offers 4 different apertures for aiming, with the wider apertures being ideal for low-light situations and full auto fire, and the finer apertures are great for long-range shots and semi-automatic fire. Changing apertures is easy in any weather conditions thanks to the knurling at the top of the drum, simply turn the sight to the chosen position and it will lock into place under spring tension.

The stock of the SMG-5J is the sliding type with multiple positions of adjustment, matching the stock issued with the SMG-5 issued to Japanese Police Forces and also found on later US Navy variants of the SMG-5. The stock has 4 positions of adjustment, one fully extended, one in the middle and then the storage position. The butt plate features a rubberised section to provide extra grip for body armour-wearing users and an extended design to allow for a limited cheek weld and improved shooter comfort. Adjusting the stock simply requires the lever at the end of the stock base to be pressed and the stock extended out to the desired position.

On the inside, the Jing Gong SMG-5J is equipped with a version 2 gearbox with an alloy shell and steel gears running on 7mm ball-bearing bushings for reduced friction and a smoother gearbox report. Basic though its internals may be, all parts are Tokyo Marui spec, meaning there are plenty of aftermarket upgrade options available for the performance seekers!

If you're seeking a modern classic SMG that won't break the bank, the Jing Gong JG069 SMG-5J SMG AEG is one to watch. Bringing a popular and timeless real steel SMG design at such an affordable price means this SMG-5 likely won't stick around for too long!

Special Instructions

Beaneath the thread protector on the tri-lug muzzle device, the JG069 has what may appear to be 14mm CCW threads. In our test example, these threads were not functional as they were slightly too small. We cannot test the functionality of each JG069's barrel threads before dispatch due to time constraints, so assume these threads are non-functional. Please consider this carefully before ordering.
